After 11 years as a designer, storyteller, and leader at IDEO.org, our CEO, Shauna Carey, has announced she is stepping down. From sharpening our design practices to shift systems towards more equitable outcomes, to inspiring changemakers to pursue bolder paths towards social impact, and steering the organization through the pandemic, Shauna has left an indelible mark. Her dedication and vision have touched every part of IDEO.org, and her unwavering belief in a more just and joyful world will continue to drive us forward. As we turn a new chapter, we're excited to announce that the board has appointed Michelle Kreger, IDEO.org's Managing Director of 8.5 years, as incoming CEO! “Michelle is a relentless champion for design, helping partners and designers translate nascent ideas into tangible prototypes, and steward those experiments towards impact at scale. From the Billion Girls CoLab to allcove centers, Michelle has dreamed up and forged partnerships for so many of our most ambitious initiatives over the years. I could not be more thrilled to see her lead IDEO.org in its new chapter.” - Shauna Carey Read Shauna's letter to our community through the link below.

In June, our CEO Shauna Carey led a workshop on the human-centered design process for the 2024 class of #BezosScholars. This cohort of students and educators from across the United States and Africa arrived with questions, curiosity, and open minds, generating an environment ripe for bold change—a facilitator's dream! After a 101 on #HCD, we explored how they might leverage the process and methods to support their individual Community Change projects. From improving health and well-being to transforming education in their communities, the scholars shared a wealth of ideas on how we might build a world we can't wait to inhabit. Its been over four years since a mysterious new illness brought the world to a standstill. IDEO.org designers ridhi arun and Claudia Sosa Lazo reflect on the early era of the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of our Vaccine Confidence Program in partnership with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Minnesota's National Resource Center for Refugees, Immigrants, and Migrants (NRC-RIM). Operating in a period of profound uncertainty and lack of information, they consider what we have learned about ourselves and our communities and what health communications ought to look like in times of crisis—and normalcy. “We realize that this work wasn’t just about designing a pandemic response—it was about building health communication and service frameworks that met people where they are in their health journey, no matter where that might be. While the pandemic plunged the world into unfamiliar waters, many communities deal with similar challenges with well-researched health issues, lacking thoughtful, culturally relevant health communications to inform their decision-making. So, what, if anything, have we learned since March 2020?” Visuals by Joan Encarnacion and Diana Haj-Ahmad

Where's the hottest spot to learn about birth control in Dallas? Your local street fair, block party, and craft bazaar. ✨ We’re thrilled to see Trust Her, our teen-centered sexual health initiative with the Child Poverty Action Lab (CPAL), featured in The Dallas Morning News. By designing a joyful environment filled with shareable takeaways—because who doesn’t want a cute uterus sticker?—Trust Her’s eye-catching booth is an irresistible invitation to engage in conversation about sexual health and access contraception. ”Bringing birth control to unexpected places — accompanied by a light-hearted vibe you’d never find in a medical settings — is a big step in providing reliable information while dissolving outdated taboos…Two hours watching four Trust Her staffers and one of their clinic partners talk with Bishop Bazaar browsers made clear the Child Poverty Action Lab is filling a big gap.” Thank you to Sharon Grigsby for the feature! #sexualhealth #reproductivehealth #teenservices #birthcontrol #sexualhealth #sexualwellness #publichealth

We've seen that when we put technology in the hands of farmers, it can begin to unlock value for them. Together with IDEO.org, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and smallholders, we developed Croppie, an AI-powered tool that gives farmers quick insights and personalised advice based on an analysis of their farming practices. Coffee farmers in Peru and Colombia have been using Croppie and here’s what we are learning: 🌱 Female farmers are more confident with using digital tools. 🌱 Yield prediction accuracy from 1M+ data points. 🌱Farmers have told us they feel more confident and better equipped to handle climate shocks. For smallholders who aren’t app-savvy, Croppie provides yield predictions and advice via SMS & WhatsApp, ensuring every farmer benefits from this digital innovation. #DigitalInclusion

We’re thrilled to announce that the Bright Futures program has won runner-up for the Best Adult Financial Education (Non-Profit) Award at The Money Awareness and Inclusion Awards! 🎉 In 2022, we partnered with Standard Chartered and Primark to design Bright Futures, a peer-driven financial education program for garment workers in Vietnam. Over seven months, we collaborated with local garment workers, community organizations, experts, and our local design partner Doodle Design to co-create a program that enables workers to develop a deeper understanding of digital finance and to access tools to manage their financial health. Bright Futures is currently being prepared for a pilot with Primark’s factories in Vietnam—we can't wait to see how this program comes to life! https://lnkd.in/dFiWiaKz #FinancialInclusion #IDEOorg #MAIAwards #BrightFutures #Vietnam #FinancialEducation

Tune in! Our CEO, Shauna Carey, joined an incredible panel on the Playfull Podcast, discussing the need for imagination and play in work. In this two-part special, Shauna, along with Emma Belcher, Sharyanne McSwain, and Taddy Blecher, share with host Kristine Michie and a live audience at the Skoll Foundation forum, how play manifests in their journeys in building a more just world. "Somewhere along the way, we internalize the idea that the creativity and inhibition that make us playful are unserious or won't be respected or trusted. This shows up in social change work, but all the social changemakers I most admire—and the most effective ones—are ambassadors for the world they're fighting for through a sense of joy alongside struggle and hard work." -Shauna Carey Part 1: https://shorturl.at/4ebBU Part 2: https://shorturl.at/51r3q #playfullpodcast #leadership #design #innovation #changemakers

Yesterday, Diana Haj-Ahmad and Hitesh Singhal, our Senior Communications Design Leads, took the stage at Canva's annual #CanvaCreate with Head of Social Impact, Robyn King, for a Q&A on co-design. Canva has been a critical tool for us to shift design decision-making power to community members. Through Canva, our community co-designers have been able to provide more hands-on feedback when building campaigns for health equity, childcare reform, and more. The tool has fostered deeper creative collaboration and given our co-designers, many of whom may not come from communication design backgrounds, a stronger sense of ownership over our shared work. We have loved seeing how our partners build upon our campaigns and adapt them to their evolving needs! It was wild to show off our work in front of so many of you at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park! Thank you to everyone who showed up! #CoDesign #SocialImpact #CommunityEngagement #AdaptableCampaigns #IDEOorg #DesignForGood #HealthEquity
