Great highlights on the Remote Sensing ABC session organized by IEEE GRSS Lahore Chapter!
Catch the highlights of "Remote Sensing ABC", a session designed to inspire both the young generation and their parents about the fascinating world of remote sensing. The event provided an engaging introduction to the basics of satellites, their launch mechanisms, and the interpretation of remote sensing imagery. We are again very thankful to IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) for sponsoring this event. #GRSS #IEEE #satellite #remote_sensing

✨✨A quick highlight of the week ✨✨ I had the great honor and privilege of emceeing and moderating a panel session at the workshop hosted by IEEE MTT-S Kenya Chapter, that brought together a delegation of the top leadership of IEEE Microwave Theory & Technology Society, IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). Together with my panelists who brought in a vast wealth of experience; Vikass Monebhurrun, Nuno Borges Carvalho, Tangus Koech and Atif Shamim we delved into the critical topic of "Research, standardization & entrepreneurship in antenna, microwave and RF industry", from the current research advancements and innovation, to development and implementation of standards. It was quite evident that Africa has the ability to realize its full potential; however there's need to bridge the wide gap that exists between academia and industry. It was great to also host Anis Ben Arfi and Qammer H. Abbasi, CEng, FRSA, FRET, FEAI, FIET representing IEEE MTT-S Young Professionals and IEEE AP-S Young Professionals who presented great initiatives that young professionals can take advantage of to enrich and enhance their careers. The visit was very productive and I am ecstatic about what the future holds for Kenya's enthusiastic researchers and professionals. Appreciation to IEEE MTT-s president, Maurizio Bozzi and president elect Goutam Chattopadhyay for the initiative to embrace Africa and bring it's great talent to the global platform. Last week i had the privilege to participate at #IGARSS24 where i met a lot of esteemed colleagues in the field of Earth Observation and had the opportunity to discuss with them. 🔑 The first key point was the discussions with Forrest Melton from NASA Ames Research Center about their work on OpenET and our work on Agri NexusHub and Cyprus Data Cube. 🔑 I had the opportunity to present my works on evolutionary neural networks for groundwater salinization and the development of EMMENA region’s Space Data Ecosystem under the framework of EXCELSIOR H2020 Teaming project. 🔑Along with my colleague Eleni Neofytou we presented our joint work on soil organic matter prediction in citrus orchards using #ArtificialIntelligence with a poster presentation. #remotesensing #earthobservation #bigdata #bigearthdata #machinelearning ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS)

I had the incredible opportunity to attend the IEEE Microwaves and Antennas Workshop at the KRA Convention Center, and it was an enlightening experience. As a space enthusiast, one standout moment was the presentation by a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Engineer and Professor Goutam Chattopadhyay . He showcased some of NASA’s cutting-edge designs, rovers and probes. One particularly exciting project featured was the Europa Clipper with advanced instruments designed to study water on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. 🚀🔬 A key takeaway from his talk was the power of collaboration: discussing design challenges over coffee with friends can spark innovative ideas. This approach was crucial in developing a key component for their water measurement instrument, highlighting how great ideas often come from simple interactions. ☕💡 The workshop had delegates from IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), IEEE AP-S Young Professionals, IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society, IEEE MTT-S Kenya Chapter, IEEE MTTS, IEEE University Of Nairobi Student Branch, IEEE Technical University of Kenya and IEEE Kenya Section. I seized the opportunity to discuss the concerns young people in Kenya face, particularly regarding future job relevance, underpayment, and the fear of overqualification. Is it beneficial to dive straight into academia after campus? The delegates provided valuable advice: follow your passions and envision where you want to be. Maurizio Bozzi highlighted that IEEE is an institution that is key in sharing knowledge and helping individuals grow in their profession. Charles Onyango, an alumnus of my department at The University of Nairobi and an engineer at Safaricom, echoed their sentiments, reminding us to never lose hope. 🌍✨ The panel discussion on antenna technologies and innovation in Africa was particularly insightful. It emphasized that when presenting ideas or innovations, remember that no one understands your work better than you do. Make the most of your resources—labs, equipment, and software. 🛠️📈 The day concluded with a fantastic networking event at Springs Hotel, where we enjoyed great food, connected with colleagues, professors, and professionals, and celebrated our shared passion for engineering and science. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this event so inspiring and memorable! 🙌🎉

a late post about my participation in IGARSS 2024 I was thrilled to participate in IGARSS 2024 in Athens with two contributions: Oral Presentation: Integrating Remote Sensing for Earthquake Risk Assessment in Istanbul's Kartal District with Ufuk Yazgan. Poster Presentation: Investigation of Land Cover Changes of Nuclear Power Plant Areas with my master's student, Aleksandra Melnik . I had the opportunity to co-chair the "Disaster and Resilience" session with Dr. Federico Frassy . It was a great experience, with many interesting presentations and a large audience. It was wonderful to reconnect with friends from 20 years ago, Pol Kolokoussis , Georgia Kalousis and her nice family, Maria Tsakiri, Angelos Tzotsos, Sofia Valani, Dr. Mohammed Dabboor, Konstantinos Karantzalos, and my master student Cem Sönmez Boyoğlu who is doing his PhD with Timo Balz from Wuhan Uni and many others I might forget to mention here. Meeting young academics in person and catching up with colleagues from Turkiye and anywhere in the world made it even more special. The Turkish delegation also made a strong impact at the symposium. It's a bit late to share this post, but I can't help expressing my wonderful experience at IGARSS this year, held in Greece, our neighboring country. It was fantastic to come together with all the ADCOM members and GRSS President Mariko Burgin to discuss current and ongoing projects involving GRSS. Additionally, I had the pleasure of presenting my work and chairing sessions organized by IADF with Hsiuhan Lexie Yang and Stefan Auer. Speaking of IADF, IGARSS gave us the chance to finally meet face-to-face as a full team after so many online meetings, which was a fantastic experience with our IADF colleagues. The editor dinners and various activities were definitely highlights of the event. And on top of that, we had the largest number of Turkish colleagues attending IGARSS this year! Thank you to all the organizers for making this IGARSS such a wonderfully great event. This IGARSS is one of the best I have attended since 2008, and I am sure we will have another great one in 2025 in Brisbane, Australia!
