Happy #NationalDogDay! 🐾 🚂 🐶 Even our four-legged best friends get excited when they see a Norfolk Southern train rolling by! It’s like they know we deliver all their favorite things— from tasty treats and pet food to cozy dog beds and essentials to keep them happy and healthy. • A tremendous announcement for our Capital City took place last week at the White House: President Biden designated the 1908 Race Riot Site in Springfield as a National Monument. One of the main factors for this designation was the unearthing of the remains of homes destroyed by the race riot during construction of the Springfield Rail Improvements Project, a priority of of #ILRail members Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern. Attaining this federal monument designation has been a major area of work for the rail project and our railroads members have been proud to support the effort.

Our chairman and CEO, Sergio "Satch" Pecori, was present to witness the historic designation of the 1908 race riot site in Springfield, Illinois, as a national monument under the Antiquities Act. Satch said, “We need to remember the past, so that we can learn from it — and not repeat it. This designation will make it possible to increase awareness and education about this terrible time in history, bring healing to the community and add historic value to the NAACP.” This milestone was made possible through Hanson’s management of the Springfield Rail Improvements Project. By following the requirements of an Environmental Impact Statement, a federal requirement for any project using federal land or tax dollars, an archeology study was conducted. Chief Environmental Scientist Kevin Seals and Fever River Research, as a subconsultant to Hanson, discovered remains of pre-1870s homes and items from the era in the 10th Street rail corridor, including those destroyed during the race riot. This discovery fulfilled a commitment outlined in an environmental impact statement prepared by the city and approved by the Federal Railroad Administration. Reflecting on this achievement, Seals said, "Since the discovery of the 1908 race riot archaeological site over 10 years ago as part of Springfield’s railroad relocation project, we have become more aware that these tragic events cannot occur in our country. It has been an honor for Hanson to play a role in this project, and we are so grateful to the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris administration for recognizing the significance of this event so that this national monument will allow us all to pay tribute to these victims and begin the process of healing from this tragedy." • The use of drones by continues to expand dramatically in a variety of way to support the work of our member railroads. Read about the cutting-edge efforts of BNSF Railway in utilizing drones to make railroading "into a faster, safer, and more sustainable line of work." "There are hundreds of uses, and BNSF, as a pioneer in UAV operation, especially among railroads, has been in a position to try just about every imaginable scenario for drone usage. “ 'We try to fail fast. If something has promise, we pursue it. If it doesn’t, we cut it and we try something else,' says Graetz. 'We will always lean into technology if it helps our customers and helps our workers increase their safety … we’re not afraid to explore new technologies.' ”

  • Thank you to Mark Denzler of Illinois Manufacturers' Association for his thoughtful commentary in The Daily Line highlighting the harmful impact the misguided California Air Resources Board locomotive rule would have on our the rail network in Illinois and our nation's supply chain: "With 65 percent of the U.S. locomotive fleet operating in California at some point, this rule could disrupt rail service throughout the entire 140,000-mile North American rail system. Our state relies heavily on access to California’s ports for a vast array of consumer products and other goods that arrive in Illinois by rail, as well as for efficient train transport of products grown, mined or manufactured here and destined for export...Senseless policies like the one being pushed in California...undercut the value of our rail connections here in Illinois."
