Creating the next generation of immigration lawyers and advocates.
About us
Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) is the country’s first fellowship program wholly dedicated to meeting the need for high-quality legal assistance for immigrants seeking citizenship and fighting deportation. Inspired by Chief Judge Robert Katzmann of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, IJC brings together the country’s most talented advocates, connects them to New York City’s best legal and community institutions, leverages the latest technologies, and fosters a culture of creative thinking that will produce new strategies to reduce the justice gap for immigrant families, ensuring that immigration status is no longer a barrier to social and economic opportunity.

Happy Independence Day! On this day, we reaffirm that seeking asylum is a human right. In a statement last month condemning President Biden's executive order that would close the southern border and restrict access to asylum, IJC CEO Jojo Annobil called the declaration "an abhorrent betrayal of American values." "The United States has a long history of offering a safe haven to refugees fleeing violence and persecution," Jojo said. "Whether due process is preserved, and justice served, should not be based on inflows at the border. We need long-term, humane policy solutions, not politics as usual." #immigration

Congratulations Theresa Cephas, J.D., and welcome to IJC!
My Summer Experience Theresa Cephas, J.D. 2024 Justice Fellows Tahirih Justice Center Immigration holds profound significance for Theresa, as a child of immigrants from Liberia who overcame numerous challenges to settle in a new country. This personal connection has shaped her understanding of the importance of support and advocacy. Her work as a paralegal and her experience at Catholic Charities of Central Florida solidified her dedication to public service. The commitment to immigrants’ rights at IJC deeply resonates with her. She is honored to join the Tahirih Justice Center in Atlanta, Georgia as an IJC Fellow, where she will advocate for immigrants in a system often stacked against them.

Meet a member of the 2024 class of Justice Fellows! Stetson University College of Law graduate Leah Burnett knew she wanted her life’s work to be advocating for social justice. It is what led her to support underserved youth as an educator and to work with adult immigrants and refugees as part of various English literacy programs. What she experienced only made her want to do more. “This work opened my eyes to the challenges that immigrants in the U.S. face and the need for passionate advocates,” she said. “Although I decided to make a career change, my desire to make an impact in the lives of others is still ever-present.” #IJCFellows #immigrationlaw

As Pride Month wraps up, we wanted to share the words of one of our 2023 Justice Fellows, Jennifer Morton. “As someone who is proud to be a part of immigrant communities (🇭🇳) as well as the LGBTQIA+ community, I feel so grateful to get to serve these communities through my fellowship with IJC and placement at Ayuda. Many people think of these communities as separate, with differing interests and causes. However, we cannot be effective advocates if we don’t understand the varied experiences and backgrounds our clients have. Remembering this is how we can do things like identify forms of relief, such as asylum claims related to someone being persecuted for their identity. It is also how we show all of our clients that we see them as whole humans with rich lives that go far beyond their immigration status. For these reasons and many more, I wish you all a very happy pride month! 🏳️🌈” #IJCFellows #pridemonth
