Creating the next generation of immigration lawyers and advocates.
About us
Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) is the country’s first fellowship program wholly dedicated to meeting the need for high-quality legal assistance for immigrants seeking citizenship and fighting deportation. Inspired by Chief Judge Robert Katzmann of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, IJC brings together the country’s most talented advocates, connects them to New York City’s best legal and community institutions, leverages the latest technologies, and fosters a culture of creative thinking that will produce new strategies to reduce the justice gap for immigrant families, ensuring that immigration status is no longer a barrier to social and economic opportunity.

2023 Justice Fellow Julia Deng, working at Make the Road New Jersey, reflects on her experience representing a client who had been previously taken advantage of by an unscrupulous private attorney. Before IJC, there was no pipeline for new legal talent into the immigration field. That meant that many immigration lawyers were inadequate. This, coupled with the lack of legal services for immigrants, has led to a crisis in legal representation for immigrants. Quality counsel makes all the difference, and IJC’s Fellows have delivered an over 90% success rate in completed cases, in contrast to a 16% success rate when an immigrant is without counsel. #IJCFellows #immigrationlaw

Audrey Mulholland, a 2019 Justice Fellow with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, shares her takeaways from the fellowship, how the experience impacts her work today, and advice for future Fellows. During her fellowship, Audrey worked out of the Dilley detention center (also known as the South Texas Family Residential Center), which was housing mothers and children in ICE detention. In 2021, when Texas Governor Greg Abbott started Operation Lone Star, Audrey pivoted to advising asylum seekers on the impacts of their arrests under the operation. She helped to provide Padilla advice, which is Supreme Court-mandated immigration counsel and advice that defendants should be given before taking any plea bargain. When TRLA’s public defender’s office split off to become the Texas RioGrande Public Defender, Audrey joined the new organization, becoming director of the Padilla-Immigration team. #IJCAlumni #immigrationlawyer

Join us this month as we celebate Disability Pride Month, marking the 1990 passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act! Unfortunately, despite the progress made, there are still barriers that persist, underscoring the need to acknowledge every type of disability, the individuals who identify with them, and the broad spectrum of support necessary for their empowerment. And for migrants with disabilities attempting to access the U.S. asylum system, the barriers could not be higher. Most migrants who want to be considered eligible for asylum have to schedule appointments at ports of entry along the U.S-Mexico border through the CBP One phone application. But the app remains inaccessible to migrants with a range of disabilities, including those who are blind, deaf, have mobility issues, and have intellectual disabilities, according to the complaint, filed by the Texas Civil Rights Project and Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center. #immigration #disabilitypridemonth
