Is your business ready for a #cyber attack? While 2024 is still young, we've already seen signficant cyber attacks at companies of all sizes. Our experience says seven key priorities will help minimize the likelihood and impact of attacks. These priorities directly address both the most likely attacks and the most impactful events. Together these help companies focus on business delivery and growth while building resilience for the future. Today, we want to focus on the first of these priorities - multi-factor authentication. Authentication builds on idenfication (knowing who someone is) by allowing an easy proof of identity - rather than duplicating the whole process of providing a birth certificate or driver's license every time we log on to systems. Think of identifcation as proving who you are to open a bank account. Authentication is the simpler process of swiping your debit card every time you want to spend some money. Passwords (something secret you know) have been the default authentication method for most of the time people have been using computers and the Internet. By around 2007 it was clear that passwords were not enough protection for online banking. Security experts started pushing for multi-factor authentication or multiple authentication factors. Something you know needed to be combined with something you have (like a debit card) or something you are (like a fingerprint). Since card readers and fingerprint readers aren't easy to connect to the Internet, companies began using one-time codes send to a cell phone (something you have) as a second factor to combine with your password. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) with something you know (password) and something you have (one-time code on your cell phone) started taking off. And MFA is for more than online banking. Today, multi-factor authentication is available in multiple ways for both internal business systems and services and for customer and consumer facing applications. Forcing the use of multiple authentication factors is one of the best defenses against hackers available in 2024. Multi-factor authentication forces attackers to go through a longer, more involved attack process. Quite simply MFA is one of the best defenses a company can implement.
