IBAT was proud to be on hand Sunday night to celebrate 50 years of the Texas Tech School of Banking and the immeasurable impact that the program has had on community banking throughout the state. Congratulations to Jeff Mercer, PhD and the innumerable bankers, faculty members and advisory board members who have contributed to the success of the program for the good of our great industry. With approximately 150 students participating in the program this year, the Texas Tech School of Banking is setting new standards for its success. IBAT is proud to have a long standing history of support and involvement with building better bankers on the South Plains.

The Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) recently honored Christy Bussey, Chief Risk Officer at Integrity Bank (In Formation) in Houston, with its 2024 Excellence in Leadership Award. Bussey was presented this prestigious award during the association’s 39th Annual Connecting Leaders Conference held June 26-29 in San Antonio. To be considered for the Excellence in Leadership Award, one must selflessly promote, support and serve independent bankers in Texas. In addition, the recipient must be a member of the IBAT Leadership Division, demonstrating a personal commitment to, and financial support of, the 450-member group, which was founded in 1985 and is dedicated to the development of tomorrow’s leaders in community banking.

Mae Beth Palone loved IBAT. More pointedly – Mae Beth loved community bankers and what community banking stands for. As Government Relations Officer, Vice President and Staff Liaison to the Leadership Division, Mae Beth lived and breathed community banking. But Mae Beth was never more proud than when she was playing mother hen to the volunteer leaders of the IBAT Leadership Division. Serving IBAT was not a job – it was a vocation to which Mae Beth dedicated more than 20 years of her life. With her support, the Leadership Division grew to almost 600 members and raised countless PAC dollars to support community banking in Texas. She served long and well until her retirement in 2017. Over the last several months, those who loved Mae Beth have made contributions in her honor to the IBAT Education Foundation – with the goal of including her in the Wall of Heroes and Legends of Texas Community Banking. This acknowledgement is proudly bestowed in the memory of Mae Beth Palone, from HER Leadership Division family. Please join us in recognizing our friend, now in heaven but still with us in so many ways.

IBAT is excited to celebrate this year’s recipients of its coveted Five*Star Award: AccuBranch (Tier 1) Advantage Health Plans Trust (Tier 2) Whitley Penn LLP (Tier 3) These three IBAT associate members were honored today during IBAT's #ConnectingLeadersConference at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort & Spa in San Antonio. Since 2002, IBAT’s Five*Star Award has recognized associate members that routinely provide excellent service and innovative solutions to help community banks grow, enhance profits and gain efficiency. To be considered for the Five*Star Award, an IBAT associate member earns engagement points—gained through participation in IBAT and industry related events. IBAT member banks then vote on those in the top 10 percent of each category to determine the winners. Criteria used to determine the winners include service excellence, human relationships, integrity, commitment to the community banking industry and exceptional value to the banks they serve. Congratulations to these top associate members!
