I guide leaders and teams out of burnout | Executive Coach and Consultant | InLight Leadership Group Founder & CEO

In recent weeks, several teams have requested workshops on dealing with burnout, resilience and work/life integration. As someone who works with clients recovering from or preventing burnout, I emphasize foundational steps. For individuals, (the steps are different for organizations) here’s where to start: 𝟭. 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱! There are many different ways to address burnout, but the only way to know what will work for your unique combination of stress is to tune in to yourself.      Recognize stress: How does stress manifest for you? What physical sensations or emotional cues do you notice? Similarly, what does ease feel like for you? Trust your inner wisdom. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗲𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝗽. Make a list of everything you do in a day or a week. - Which ones drain your energy? - Which ones bring you joy - even if it’s just a spark? 𝟯. 𝗔𝗱𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗷𝗼𝘆 - 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆! Keep it simple and start today. It could be adding artwork or flowers to your workspace or taking a 5-minute stretch break outdoors. Whatever it is, do it today! These simple actions for the foundation for getting unstuck. What would you add? #burnout #executivecoaching #worklife

Last week I facilitated a session with a group of early childhood education center directors. The dedication these women have towards their work and the children they serve is so inspiring. We focused on building resilience through all the challenges and pressures that have changed the field in the last few years. We all deal with this in some way, so I want to share the approach we took. 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥, 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 - 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝. Here’s how to start:   - Think about a time when you were thriving. What made it possible? Who helped? List all the elements that made it work.   - Now take that list and see where you find those elements in the current situation. What strengths exist right now? What's working already?   - Write down everything that’s working right now. You may have 10 things, it may only be one or two, but I promise you if you look for them,    you'll find pockets of success.   - How can you build on what’s working? What's in your circle of control? Start with that.   - Keep moving forward. Change is inevitable, but so is progress. #executivecoaching #leadership #appreciativeinquiry #positivepsychology NH Center for Nonprofits

  • An intentional culture can drive results, and the first step is to start with a strength-based approach to culture. Once we know what's working, it's easier to build a healthy, human-centered approach to business.

I love that the first recommendation for scaling the best parts of your culture is to focus on using a strengths-based approach. There is always something that is going right, people who are engaged, and pockets of healthy culture! Sometimes we overlook what's working because we are so used to focusing on the problems. This is why I use the Appreciative Inquiry method in my executive coaching and consulting work. Here's a great bit of advice from the article: "Rather than asking the most disengaged people how they feel about the organization’s culture, study your best teams. Which teams exemplify the best version of your culture? How do they see the organization? When and where do they see culture influencing the decisions they make?" If you want to dive deeper and learn more about how you can build on what's already working - in your personal leadership or in your organization - let's connect! #engagement #humancenteredleadership #executivecoaching

  • The power of "yet" as a way to keep us moving forward. Simply adding the word "yet" to the end of your sentence can make a big difference. I don't know how to do that, yet. I'm not good at public speaking, yet. I am not a morning person, yet. You get the idea. Give it a try!

2023 could have knocked me on my ass with some very unexpected and sudden changes in my life. These changes were hard and impacted my family, my pride, and, if I'm honest with myself, a big part of my identity. What saved me and made it possible to turn things around quickly and embrace these changes? I've spent years practicing the art of embracing the inner work during life's transitions. Because of that work, I have an unwavering trust in my intuition and confidence in my ability to learn new things. I have built a community that supports me, and I know I can count on them. I believe life is meant to be expansive, and we can all navigate hard things with grace and even a bit of joy. It just takes practice. Psychological safety is a fundamental part of creating intentionally healthy workplaces. There are a number of things you can do to build this type of safety, as this article shares. https://bit.ly/49NNwUe My favorite way to start the process is by asking a very simple set of questions: - What part of your work do you love doing? - Where do you feel like you get to use your best strengths? - What part of your job feels like the most fun? Asking people to talk about what lights them up shifts the dynamic almost immediately! Jim Huling NH Center for Nonprofits Tricia Dempsey #appreciativeinquiry #psychologicalsafety #leadership

I recently received an unexpected email from a former team member who worked with me over ten years ago. Back then, she was pretty early in her career; looking back, so was I. She reached out to tell me a short story. She told me she was part of a women's book club discussing leadership, and she started talking about me. She remembered that I once told her: I will always have your back, and if I feel a misstep, we will talk afterward. I remember that conversation with her. And I remember when my mentor said it to me several years earlier. She went on to share that this conversation still resonates with her all these years later. She told her book group that I was the first leader she had ever worked for, which was different from working for a boss. Her email brightened my whole week. Most of the time, trust is built in these seemingly simple ways. It's humbling to know that something as simple as that conversation could have such an impact on someone's life. The power of your presence and your integrity will make all the difference. #leadership #management Jim Huling Tricia Dempsey

I love this visual because it reminds me of the incredible transformation in our minds when we gather information. Information is like seeds, and it needs time and space to grow. Just as a seed needs the right conditions to grow, our minds need a nurturing environment for information to take root and merge with what we already know. It's not about collecting data; it's about pausing, allowing it to flourish into knowledge, and giving it room to breathe. Wisdom, however, is the fruit of this patient cultivation. And wisdom requires space for thought and contemplation. In our fast-paced lives, prioritizing these moments is key. Embrace the pauses, take a breath, and let it simmer.
