Hurricane Beryl Response Update: Inspiritus Disaster Relief teams are hard at work in Bay City, Texas providing crucial support to the Sanford Community Center. This beloved center has long been a safe and welcoming space for youth, families, and visitors, offering classes in art, ESL, poetry, cooking, and hosting community events. #HurricaneBeryl's fierce winds caused extensive damage, uprooting trees and leaving dangerous debris, particularly on the playground use by local children. Our dedicated teams are providing essential chainsaw and swamping services to clear the area and ensure the center can reopen as soon as possible. The Sanford Community Center is more than a community hub; it's a historic landmark. Originally built in 1928 as The Palacios Colored School, it played a crucial role during the segregation era. It later became Rainbow Land Day Care and now serves as a Sanford Community Center. We will continue our efforts in Matagorda County, Texas, through August 9. There’s still time to help! Volunteers of all skill levels are needed. Click the link below to learn how you or your group can make a difference and support Hurricane Beryl survivors on their road to recovery. Foster Parent Spotlight: Meet Michelle! Michelle is a remarkable foster parent who joined the Inspiritus Foster Care Team in 2023. Michelle has a unique skillset as she is a nurse and works in clinical education; subsequently, she fosters only medically fragile children. Currently, she has two medically fragile children placed in her home (Nigel and Harmoni). Nigel is 6 years old and has an intellectual disability, speech-language impairment, and traumatic brain injury that causes him to have social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Harmoni is 3 years old and has several medical issues. Harmoni uses a ventilator to ensure she maintains breathing, is subject to several seizures a day, and has a G-Tube to assist with feedings. Although Michelle works full time, she has developed a system to support each child and their needs, to include working with nursing services, having a very organized schedule to ensure the children’s medical needs are met, and ensuring the children attend school as a means of enhancing their social skills. Michelle also recognizes the special qualities of each child and ensures she does special things for each of them. For example, Nigel loves listening to music and watching certain programs on Netflix. Subsequently, Michelle has a routine that allows him to relax in a play area and enjoy these activities on a daily basis. Harmoni, on the other hand, thrives from Michelle's touch. So, Michelle provides soothing massages to Harmoni especially during seizures, which help her to calm down and ease her stress. Michelle goes above and beyond with children who have high levels of medical needs. Thank you for your service, Michelle!
