This weekend, IBHS took our science to Fire Safe Marin's Ember Stomp to conduct a #wildfire demo that compare the impact of embers to a home that is built to IBHS's Wildfire Prepared Home standard and one built to typical construction. Wildfire mitigation is critical to stop the spread of wildland embers from extreme fire events into communities. Homeowners are not powerless and can follow a system of science-backed mitigation steps to meaningfully reduce their home's wildfire risk. Sometimes you need to drive a message home. Sometimes you need to literally drive the hurricane and high-wind through a home to open the minds of homeowners about what Mother Nature can bring their way. Today, IBHS wind-driven rain research and the FORTIFIED program were highlighted by Matt Gutman on Good Morning America (ABC). The segment, filmed at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS Research Center over four days last month, featured a full-scale house in the test chamber subjected to rain and winds up to 125 mph. The demonstration shows the importance of strengthening three vulnerable areas of the home – the roof, garage doors and openings like doors and windows – to prevent damage from wind and wind-driven rain. https://lnkd.in/eHk2iGXx

Hear from IBHS Research Scientist Xareni Sánchez Monroy, as she shares the importance of creating a 5-foot non-combustible buffer around your home to reduce its #wildfire risk with Nationwide COO Mark Berven. #InsideIBHSResearch
I’m excited to share a look #InsideIBHS as research scientist Xareni Sánchez Monroy, Ph.D., walks me through a controlled fire simulation at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS HQ. She demonstrates how small embers can cause huge damage, why it’s critical to have at least 5 feet of “defensible space” around your home and how the new Wildfire Prepared Home program can help property owners mitigate risk. #ProtectionIsOurPurpose https://lnkd.in/eR3rbKjj

In IBHS’s new report following an investigation of the Lahaina Fire, researchers concluded three main factors contributed to rapid conflagration: 🏘️ 🏡 Structure density: Flames from burning homes often extended over 20 feet, touching homes at closer distances downwind. 🚗🍃Connective fuels: Vegetative fuels, including wild grass and ornamental plants, along with manmade items like sheds, fences and vehicles, acted as pathways that brought the wildfire to and enabled it to spread within the built environment. 🔨 🏗️Building materials: Non-combustible building materials offer significantly higher resilience than traditional materials, but their effectiveness was diminished in Lahaina due to intense heat from burning buildings with limited spacing between structures. These insights can help communities understand their vulnerabilities and build a more resilient future. Read the report at https://ibhs.org/lahaina. #Lahaina #Maui #wildfire
