Nested #serosurveys within routine service delivery platforms such as planned supplemental #immunization activities (SIAs) provide an opportunity to collect information that can be used to answer valuable questions on the effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery model to inform future activities. However, integrating research data collection in SIAs is rarely done due to concerns it will negatively impact the program. "The successful eradication of smallpox, certified in 1980, showcased the immense potential of vaccines to control diseases. The momentum of the Smallpox Eradication Program in its final years and the vision of providing life-saving vaccines to children everywhere led WHO to establish the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in 1974, with support from all member states. This year, the global health community commemorates 50 years of this momentous effort and looks ahead to maximizing the potential impact of one of the most potent interventions in public health." In response, public health entities are increasingly embracing social media influencers (SMIs) as potential health promotion collaborators. Despite burgeoning interest in the potential of these partnerships, research evaluating this strategy remains limited. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review to characterize and describe the current landscape of health promotion collaborations with SMIs with a focus on current practices. The Global #Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is a global single-disease program with an extensive infrastructure in some of the world’s most underserved areas. It provides a key example of the opportunities and challenges of transition efforts—the process of shifting from donor-funded, single-disease programs to programs with more integrated and sustainable programmatic and funding streams. Learn more about what researchers learned from interviews they conducted with GPEI officials.
