Chris Payne – “Be a pickpocket, observe others and think about what you want to take and steal for yourself. Add it to your toolbox, everyone has something to teach you” - the best words of advice from his wrestling coach. Chris gave his Leadership lessons to the Fashion Institute of Technology’s FIT Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management MPS program students. Small and Big companies are both great, the work is simply different. Think of your career as a marathon, not a sprint. You can always go back and do things you like, but right now you should push yourself to do new things with new people, and expose yourself to as much as possible to get different perspectives because they’re all valid. Invest time in a job, don’t change jobs every year. You should put in the time to actually work through the projects, dig in and actually learn. Be a sponge, make mistakes earlier on and it’s OK to fail. It’s just not OK to not understand why it didn’t work, what you could’ve done differently and done better because you’re the only one who will be doing it down the road. With over a decade together at L'Oréal, I love watching you navigate your career in such an untraditional path.
