Nutrient recycling underscores the importance of preserving seabird populations and their habitats, as they contribute significantly to the health and productivity of surrounding ecosystems. Conservation efforts aimed at removing invasive species from islands and accelerating the return of native species can thus have far-reaching benefits, restoring natural nutrient flows and supporting the resilience of coral reefs. Alto Velo Island has joined the IOCC! The restoration project on the island aims to eradicate invasive species and foster the recovery of native populations. The project serves as a model for similar conservation efforts across the Caribbean, showcasing the power of collaborative, science-based action. By eradicating invasive species and restoring native habitats, we can ensure that Alto Velo remains a sanctuary for biodiversity and a beacon of hope for island conservation worldwide. In a new study that underscores the multiple benefits of island restoration, scientists have shown how holistically restoring islands can significantly boost seabird populations, which have a positive impact on ecosystem connectivity and resilience. The study explains how seabirds act as vital connectors between the land and sea, shuttling essential nutrients between their feeding and breeding grounds. The study’s predictive models offer a beacon of hope: through strategic, holistic island restoration, including invasive species removal and native vegetation revival, seabird populations can flourish once again. At Island Conservation, we have witnessed the benefits of healthy seabird populations firsthand on many of our projects worldwide. The study advocates for the integration of seabird-led nutrient flows into island restoration strategies, emphasizing their role in fortifying ecosystems against climate change threats like sea-level rise and coral bleaching. Floreana Island in the Galápagos archipelago is home to an incredible diversity of native species found nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, invasive species have wreaked havoc on the island, resulting in 54 IUCN Threatened species. Island Conservation, with local and international partners, is supporting the Floreana Community in it’s vision of a restored and rewilded Floreana Island. This will allow the island’s unique fauna the opportunity to flourish and thrive and create the conditions for sustainable community tourism and farming on the island. The partners are currently working to confirm the removal of invasive species a success and then plan to begin reintroducing 12 iconic Floreana species.
