JA Spotlight: We want to express our appreciation for our partnership with U.S. Bank. Volunteers from US Bank came to the McGrath Family JA BizTown yesterday to help students practice their communication and interviewing skills. US Bank is a long-time supporter of JA BizTown, a mini-city simulation that introduces young people to the world of #business. The US Bank BizTown shop exposes students to the #banking industry, how banks operate, and the different #careerpathways within the industry. US Bank additionally supports our JA Fellows program, a workforce development program that provides #socialcapital and paid work-based learning experiences to high school students in historically underserved communities. Thank you to JA San Diego Executive Board Member and US Bank Market President Manuel E. Rodriguez, CFA for his leadership and guidance in empowering the next generation. And thank you to JA YES Board Member Brittny Ferguson, Enrique Meza, and the US Bank volunteers for helping to equip local youth with the tools and knowledge to succeed.

JA San Diego was recently featured on NBC 7 San Diego for a story on the benefits of early financial literacy education following the passage of CA AB 2927 which will require high school students to take a financial literacy to graduate beginning in 2030. The NBC news crew came to Mission Fed JA Finance Park to see how JA San Diego is preparing youth for their financial futures and speak with Escondido Union School District students about the lessons they learned from the budgeting simulation experience. It has been an exciting few weeks as Lincoln High School, Chula Vista Learning Community Charter, and Morse High students began their paid work experiences as part of our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). SYEP connects high school students to social capital and work opportunities with high-growth, in-demand San Diego industries. The program supports professional development and career readiness for at-promise youth. SYEP launched this summer under the Youth Empowerment Workforce Initiative of County Board of Supervisors Chair Nora E Vargas and was recently featured in her Mid-Year report. Check out JA on page 8: https://lnkd.in/gimbTpaP We’d like to thank our amazing partners who have provided students with the amazing opportunity to gain relevant, hands-on work experience. Huge thanks to Vanessa and the leadership team at Illumina, including CEO Jacob Thaysen who hung out with and inspired San Diego’s future leaders. And shoutout to our community partner, San Diego Squared - SD2 and JA Fellows participated together in this unique experience!
In my opinion, this is one of the most special weeks of the year for the Illumina CSR team. We open the Illumina campus in San Diego to 29 students from Junior Achievement of San Diego County and San Diego Squared for the Illumina High School STEM Scholars Program. In a nutshell, they learn about Illumina, genomics, the careers that are available and lots of professional development. There have been many opportunities for reflection and gratitude. Some of my moments of gratitude (so far...): 🎇 When I think about Access to Genomics, STEM is such an integral part of the progress of Illumina's future. It is necessary to ensure these bright students know Illumina is better for them being here and hopefully one day as an employee. 🤞 🎇 Last week, we enjoyed beautiful Torrey Pines and it provided an opportunity to connect with them in a casual setting and learn about where they come from, what brought them to this program and what their aspirations are. 💡 🎇 These students are truly special. We are not bringing out anything new in them, but we are opening doors that they might not have had access to and allowing them to shine in a new setting. 🎇 Our senior leadership has SHOWN UP in such an inspiring way this week. Patricia Leckman, CPO kicked it off Monday sharing why she joined Illumina, why she has stayed for over 15 years. and how to get the most out of the week. ✍ 🎇 Grateful for CEO Jacob Thaysen joining our Give Back activity, decorating capes for the superhero patients at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego... students heard why he joined Illumina, his hopes for where we will be when they are applying for jobs and how they can have a lucrative career and make an impact in the world. 💬 🎇 I have seen Jen Nahama SHINEEE this week. You are made to lift up students and inspire them to see what is possible. Kudos to you. Thank you to SD2's Karmin Noar & H. Puentes and the JA team, Sidd Vivek Pana Hap Hanna Jensen Yaxsarie Velazquez for your partnership. 🤝 Sharon Vidal Nicole Zuniga Loren Korch Karen Wetherholt My cup is full and it is only Wednesday! ☕ Stay tuned for more...
