Thanks, Paul, for recognizing the unique qualities of the Jaunt Journey. https://lnkd.in/gzY4A9Ea
You may have seen a bit of a dustup that occurred over the latest release of the AAM Reality Index (ARI) a few days ago. Mark Moore, a renown eVTOL enthusiast took exception with the ranking of the top three OEMs in the ARI (Volocopter, EHang and Beta) by claiming these are literally the three worst platforms from a concept/technology perspective. Just guessing here but I don't think Mark was very happy with the fact a couple of his favorite entrants (Joby and Archer) were ranked behind the three leaders. I have to agree with Mark to some extent, based on the notion the technology readiness level (TRL) assessment technique as used in the ARI algorithm is probably not the best way to predict success over the longer term in AAM. But I'm also thinking the best technology doesn't always win when it comes to adoption - an immutable lesson many entrepreneurs learn in the school of hard knocks. However, if you think otherwise maybe one of the players currently ranked near the very the bottom of the ARI could be more to your liking… The Journey eVTOL from Jaunt Air Mobility has a lot going for it on the technology front despite being ranked 27th out of 28 in the latest ARI. It's a winged eVTOL so it's much more efficient in forward flight than a wingless multirotor like Volocopter and EHang, which suffer on speed and range accordingly. It also sports a single, large rotor that due to lower disk loading is more efficient in hover than other winged platforms like Joby and Archer, which are configured with many smaller tiltrotors as well as fixed lift props in the case of Archer. The neat thing here is this large rotor spins at the same speed as the aircraft itself in forward flight, to mitigate drag in the wing-borne regime. The Journey eVTOL may also turn out to be a safer platform since it can autorotate to a safe landing like a conventional helicopter - something most of the leading eVTOLs can't do. And unlike the preponderance of eVTOLs that are classified as powered-lift aircraft, this platform has a relatively straight forward and well defined path to certification since it is considered to be a rotorcraft - just like many conventional helicopters that have been certified over several decades. Don't be surprised if success on the part of Jaunt paves the way for the "eHELI" similar to the e-R44, a battery-electric version of the conventional R44 helicopter from Robinson. You probably won't see any wings on these early adaptations but I suspect you will over time, as more clean-sheet AAM designs emerge from vertical lift incumbents. So if you are of the opinion the best technology will rule the day, you may want to take a closer look at the Journey eVTOL from Jaunt. There's a lot to like and it could leave many competitors in its wake... realistically speaking ;) #eVTOL #AAM #ARI
