Hawaii is home to some of the most stunningly beautiful beaches our planet has to offer, it's also home to a Jensen Precast facility. So, when the University of Hawaii started conducting extensive research on how to protect their breathtaking beaches from escaping into the ocean, they landed on one solution: Precast concrete. Members of Jensen's Hawaii team worked closely with scientists from the University of Hawaii and engineers from Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. to design and manufacture completely custom structures utilizing precast concrete. The large holes in the reef structure are designed to dissipate wave energy and the concrete domes with unique shapes promote coral growth. According to the researchers in Hawaii, more than half of the world’s coral reefs have perished, and 90% of the remaining reefs are projected to die within the next century due to warming ocean temperatures. That's why it's important to take active measures to keep Hawaii's beautiful sandy beaches from eroding and eventually disappearing. Because sometimes, lasting infrastructure solutions as bold as protecting the pretty beaches of Hawaii require a partner prepared to meet any challenge. At Jensen, we're more than just precasters. Our team of expert engineers works directly with you to create fully customized precast concrete solutions tailored to your unique needs. Even if that need is as ambitious as protecting coastlines against the powerful Pacific Ocean. Every time it rains, all the motor oils, lawn fertilizers, and bug pesticides sitting stagnant on our roads and rooftops wash away into the storm drains and ultimately our waterways. And in Culver City, California, all waterways typically lead to one place, the Pacific Ocean. That's why when Culver City went to widen a busy street, they also needed to update their stormwater infrastructure. Because no one wants a dirty ocean. Here is more on this project from our most recent case study: "Stormwater is initially collected at the street and diverted down into the Jensen Deflective Separators (JDS) units, there are two on the project," says Christopher Purdie, Sales Operations Manager for Jensen Precast. "The JDS unit works to remove trash, debris, and sediment from the stormwater as a pretreatment device, capturing everything down to the size of a match head. That water then makes its way to the underground retention system which has approximately 2.6 million gallons of available stormwater storage." Not only is stormwater being pretreated and captured, it’s also being reused for irrigation on the land above the retention system and nearby parks. "There is a heavy reuse activity on this project," says Purdie. "We're capturing the stormwater, we're pretreating it, then we are using it for different things." What do you do when you have a massive stormwater project that requires a hulking detention reservoir, two hydrodynamic separators, and a 30-foot-tall pump station? You call Jensen Precast. Culver City, California, needed to update its stormwater infrastructure to align with regulations set by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. So, our facilities in California and Nevada greased the forms and mixed the concrete to deliver over 500 pieces of precast perfection. Now, Culver City has modern stormwater infrastructure and is helping to keep the Pacific Ocean free of debris and bacteria. If you are at #StormCon this week hosted by Stormwater Solutions Magazine, stop by booth # 420 and ask about this project.
