Working to build a stronger, healthier, more resilient San Diego
About us
Founded in 1918, Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) is a people-centered, impact-driven organization working to build a stronger and healthier community where everyone can thrive. Every day, people turn to JFS because they need someone in their corner. We welcome everyone with dignity, compassion, and respect. We listen to understand and approach their challenges with their strengths, motivations, and unique circumstances in mind. When people first contact JFS, it’s often with an urgent need like food, transportation, or housing. Others seek assistance for an aging parent or a new network of support. We start by helping people access the critical resources they need to stabilize. Then, we work together to create a plan. With an approach rooted in supportive personal relationships and strong community partnerships, we deliver services that foster the health, skills, confidence, and resilience of every person we serve. Over time, community members build a foundation of economic stability, personal wellbeing, and community connection that empowers them to thrive. With great people, strong values, a focused mission, and a supportive community, there’s no limit to what we can do together. Every year, JFS staff nominate fellow team members whose passion, dedication, and commitment to living our values shines through their work. Mazel tov to Sol Kempinski and Jesus Mares, recipients of this year’s Henrietta Rubenstein Staff Development Awards! Sol Kempinski, Director of Philanthropy, Individual Giving, has been with JFS for more than 15 years. Sol always goes above and beyond in every interaction. He leads with empathy, always looking to find ways to connect and deepen his relationship with everyone. Sol is the definition of the word “mensch”. Jesus Mares, Junior Systems and Applications Administrator is known for his boundless positivity that amplifies our Jewish values. His calm demeanor is reassuring and comforting, and while he possesses great knowledge and skill, he is also committed to learning and being persistent in tackling short-term challenges and long-term projects that change the way we work. Thank you, Sol and Jesus, for all you do to help keep JFS and our community Moving Forward Together. #staffawards #henriettarubenstein #community #movingforward #strongertogether

Today, JFS Board Chair, Deborah Bucksbaum Maio, announced at JFS’s annual meeting that after 13 years at the helm of JFS, Michael Hopkins will be retiring one year from now, on June 30, 2025. After a thorough and diligent succession planning process, JFS’s Board selected Dana Toppel, JFS’s COO, as the incoming CEO. Michael’s many accomplishments include expanding the JFS headquarters in Kearny Mesa to create the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus, enabling JFS to increase and centralize services; the creation of the Center for Jewish Care that assists community members who are experiencing trauma, grief, or financial challenges; facilitating JFS’s leadership in the creation of the San Diego Rapid Response Network and its Migrant Shelter Services for people seeking asylum that JFS operates—now regarded as a national model; and leading our nonprofit through our Centennial Celebration and Endowment Campaign, to sustain the future of the organization. During Dana’s 15-year tenure with JFS, she has served as the Director for Older Adults, Divisional Director for Clinical and Educational Services, Chief Program Officer, and for the past nine years, as Chief Operating Officer. Dana has played a crucial role in JFS’s strategic planning, navigated the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic while expanding critical services for the community to record levels, and has provided the vision and leadership for the nonprofit’s guaranteed income pilot programs, helping families achieve economic security through unrestricted cash assistance. Dana has also been an integral part of JFS’s Safe Parking Program, now offering six safe parking lots for people living out of their vehicles to pursue more stable housing. Together, both Michael and Dana will work to ensure a seamless transition over the next year as we keep JFS and our community, Moving Forward Together. #CEO #community #JewishCommunity #leadership #movingforward #strongertogether

Chesed (kindness) is a door that opens us up to connection, to empathy and compassion, and ultimately, to responsibility to the other. Yesterday at our Rebbe’s Tisch (Rabbi’s Table), Rabbi Susan Freeman from the Center for Jewish Care and Dana Toppel, Chief Operating Officer at JFS, led a discussion with a group of team members and volunteers on one of JFS’s guiding Jewish values of chesed (kindness). As we head into the long days of summer, let us always be reminded of the value of kindness. A kinder world takes all of us. Shabbat Shalom. #kindnessmatters #community #movingforward #strongertogether
