Today is Women’s Equality Day! This day honors and celebrates a momentous occasion in our history — the passage of the 19th Amendment. Established in 1971, Women’s Equality Day not only recognizes the brave women who fought tirelessly for this right but also serves as a reminder that the journey toward full gender equality in all areas of life continues. Let’s take this day to reflect on how far we’ve come and renew our dedication to achieving equality for all women — today and every day. P.S. Did you know that Minnesota played a key role in the women’s suffrage movement? It began with the founding of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Association in 1869, which advocated for women’s voting rights. The state made early progress by granting women the right to vote in school board elections in 1875 and continued to push for full suffrage under the leadership of prominent suffragists like Clara Ueland. Today marks a significant chapter in history — the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of the Civil War and the liberation of approximately 250,000 enslaved individuals in Texas. This momentous occasion occurred two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. May we reflect on the significance of this day, recognize the ongoing journey of equality, and recommit ourselves to the fight for justice and freedom for all. Happy Juneteenth!

Each year at AJLI’s Annual Conference, part of the programming includes the highly-anticipated awards ceremony that recognizes and honors the work of Junior Leagues worldwide. This year, it was especially exciting, because The Junior League of Minneapolis was recognized as the Fund Development Award Winner for Division II for The Clothes Line Pop-Up! The award recognizes outstanding fundraising initiatives that directly contribute to The Junior League Mission; divisions are based on League size. It aims to spotlight programs that showcase exemplary fundraising practices and brand promotion. So what was The Clothes Line Pop-Up all about? We’re glad you asked! In the 1950s, three women on JLM’s Ways and Means Committee had the idea to open a resale store both as a fundraiser and a community service. Fast forward to June 2022, and a few Sustainers envisioned bringing The Clothes Line back as a pop-up sale in honor of JLM’s 100th anniversary.   On August 11, 2023, truckloads of merchandise were delivered to the Eden Prairie Center and the Committee, along with other volunteers, began organizing the store. Our doors opened on Wednesday, September 6, with a sold-out Preview Party. Guests mingled, ate, shopped and reminisced about The Clothes Line. It was a wonderful way to kick off JLM’s 100th year!   The next day, we welcomed customers and were open to the public. A young woman, who had just applied for a job in the mall, purchased a few items in case she got the job. The next day she came back to tell us she got the job and purchased many more items for her new work wardrobe! Another customer got outfitted for a new internship.   Since its inception, The Clothes Line was more than a fundraiser. It was also a community service project of the League.   When all was said and done — we didn’t just meet our financial goal, we exceeded it. We were thrilled to be able to donate $16,000 to both the Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery and Free Arts, a Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities project. #JuniorLeague #JLM100 #JLMinneapolis #Nonprofit
