"What we run into most frequently is obviously mobility issues. A lot of our public spaces were designed at a time when that was not taken into account, and so everything from just door thresholds to stairs can be impediments to that. I think that’s probably what most people are familiar with when we say there are accessibility challenges with spaces. What we also find is it’s not just folks who are in wheelchairs who have issues with these impediments in the public realm. It can be everybody from somebody who’s on crutches to somebody who has a stroller. It's been a privilege to be a part of such a dynamic, diverse, and talented team of designers, planners, and consultants - and collaborating with such a passionate client is a joy! Here's more about this expansive 16-acre mixed-use and mixed-income development for Everett Housing Authority:

“The community’s experience of the building was the guiding principle of the design. Johnston Architects always strives to create a site-specific design and so look to the existing context for conceptual guidance. We identified, very early on, the idea of buildings embedded in lush landscape and Mercer Island’s strong network of community parks. This shaped the building’s site design strongly: it became a building set in a series of small urban pocket parks,” said McKay, an Island resident. And that’s the unique thing about this project, and a lot of our work: the trees, we felt, were an asset that we could work with that would enhance the character, not only of the buildings that we construct on the site but maintain the character of the neighborhood. "With just ninety-five residences, Kirin is small in comparison to many of Seattle’s mixed-use buildings, but JA designers integrated useful private and public spaces into its design. The first floor commercial spaces are ideal for cafes or restaurants, with a covered, landscaped veranda ready for outdoor seating. David Fuchs, a Principal at Johnston Architects, was Shared Roof’s designer. He was intrigued by the unique model Dale and his investors proposed and the challenges it presented. “Instead of looking at how to build a bunch of individual rowhouses in a line – which is what you’re seeing with the new zoning – we wondered how can we build a building that works with a group of people with shared values? ICYMI: The new City of Redmond, WA Senior & Community Center was featured by 425 Business just after its grand opening. "The new $61.7 million, 52,000-square-foot building — a product of significant public input and stakeholder meetings built to serve all ages — opened its doors to scores of city staff, elected leaders, and others gathered for a celebratory ribbon-cutting Friday afternoon. It followed more than a half-dozen speeches thanking people, past and present, for their roles in the project, with a couple speakers choking back tears of joy over the finished facility and journey to get there.
