About us
The Journal of Healthy Eating and Active Living (JHEAL) is an online, open-access, triannual, peer-reviewed journal focused on publishing high-quality studies in active living and healthy eating. Of particular interest are studies of the interactional nature between active living and/or healthy eating and the “environment,” broadly defined as social, cultural, economic, political, natural, virtual, and built dimensions. Papers that report on multi-level studies and interventions are also welcome. We publish full-length reports, brief communications, meta-analyses, scoping reviews, translational and practice-based research, policy and systems change evaluations, natural experiment studies, case studies, notes from the field, commentaries, and systematic reviews. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies are all encouraged. Because we value the application of research, we invite submissions from researchers as well as practice- and policy-oriented submissions from practitioners, policy makers, and advocates. Research and practice/policy papers will have separately-labeled sections, and reviewers with appropriate expertise will be selected. We are also open to publishing digital media files, including maps, visualizations, and other modern media.

Congrats to PhD student and all-around superstar Nicole Odell on the publication of the second paper from her MS. Trail use and recreational physical activity behavior of trail users and non-users during COVID-19 restrictions in Colorado Springs, Colorado Some cool takeaways: - "We found that trail use increased during restrictions and returned to pre-pandemic levels after the restrictions." - "Greenway trail users participated in 153 more minutes per week of total physical activity (PA) during restrictions, and users were more likely to maintain or increase total PA during restrictions than non-users." - "More non-trail users decreased their total PA than increased, whereas more trail users increased their total PA compared to decreased." My takeaway - Greenways supported increased and maintained physical activity during COVID-19 restrictions, but not every community has a greenway. How do we continue to grow greenway and other bike/pedestrian infrastructure in our communities? How might walking groups or other light programming encourage walking/cycling in communities with and without greenway access? Nicole Odell's dissertation will in part investigate how Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees support such equitable growth through governance and policy. Congrats to Jared Jones on publishing his NC State Parks, Recreation & Tourism Management MS thesis. This is work with NC Recreation & Park Association. Physical Activity Promotion in North Carolina: a Reassessment of Public Park and Recreation Directors 123 North Carolina Parks and Recreation Directors responded to a survey about physical activity promotion within their communities. He compared their responses to a similar survey from 2007. The good news: "Partnerships with county health departments are being reported more in counties with the highest health disparities compared to more healthy counties, indicating that partnerships are being targeted and implemented in areas where resources are most needed."
