JURIST Board members generally have a two-year term, are expected to help promote and support JURIST and its mission, and participate in corporate governance. Nominees for JURIST's Board should have achieved national and/or international prominence in law, education, media and/or technology, be committed to upholding the rule of law, and have a demonstrable interest in supporting law students dedicated to public service and the promotion of justice through accurate and responsible legal journalism. Welcome to our second video on UK Elections. In this video, I (Tim Zubizarreta) as JURIST’s Alumnus-in-Residence and a former managing editor, discuss the general mechanics of UK elections and what it means to vote in the UK. As a fun aside, this will be the first UK election held under the new Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act of 2022. Under the previous Fixed-Term Parliaments Act of 2011, elections were mandated to be held on fixed terms every 5 years unless the House of Commons voted with a 2/3 majority to dissolve Parliament. This lasted most of a decade with the exception of Boris Johnson's 2019 dissolution of Parliament which was done through a singular piece of legislation designed to circumvent the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act. The new Dissolution and Calling of Parliaments Act returns the prerogative for calling elections exclusively to the Prime Minister and the Monarch.
