Reflecting on our latest focus group findings, it's clear that being system-impacted and navigating the COVID experience has profoundly shaped participants' views. They expressed deep cynicism about the power of national voting, feeling disconnected from politicians, whom they see as out of touch. There's a strong desire for new faces, especially at state and local levels, where participants feel more represented. Many girls and women in the group highlighted that the current political stage, dominated by a demographic that does not represent them, is not worth their engagement. Every day, we hear of more cases of non-consensual ai-generated explicit materials being made and distributed in K-12 schools. It is more important than ever to make sure educational institutions are equipped to protect their students and prevent this from happening. This is why we, along with 36 other gender equity organizations, are joining @SVPAOfficial in asking @U.S. Department of Education to provide school administrators with guidance on their duties under #TitleIX. Despite challenges, these young leaders believe in the strength of coming together as a group, recognizing that collective action is key to overcoming divisions and achieving success. They emphasize the importance of chosen family alongside blood family, showing deep concern for the younger generations and their future. Whether it’s boycotting, voting in local elections, or taking community action, Gen Z is all about making impactful changes that ripple out to influence national policy. 🗳 The political actions people see as most effective tend to be voting (federally or on the state and local level) and mutual aid, described as “working together to meet each other’s needs, such as food and housing.” In their values and actions, participants are focused on interpersonal community care and meeting concrete basic needs of others. Our research shows young people are finding power in mutual aid and community care. During our insightful discussion with focus groups, we delved into the differences between freedom and liberation, particularly among gender-expansive and cisgender groups. Our findings were fascinating: 🔹 Distractions & Problems: Issues that could be resolved if only there was more action from the government. 🔹 Freedom vs. Liberation: Gender-expansive groups resonated more with 'liberation' than 'freedom', seeing it as a pathway to complete freedom. 🔹 Engagement: Gender-expansive groups tended to be more politically engaged and aware compared to cisgender groups. 🔹 Word Clouds: When talking about freedom, people mentioned choice, opportunities, and independence. For liberation, control, liberty, and revolution were key themes. As we move forward, it's crucial to craft messages that resonate with young voters, empowering them to believe in their ability to drive change.
