Our mission is to fight poverty in rural areas of the developing world.

About us

Karimu founders Don Stoll and Marianne Kent-Stoll first visited Dareda Kati (Tanzania) in 2007 as tourists because they were curious about life in an African village. They were welcomed by the whole community and invited to come back. Shocked by some of the challenges facing the villagers they felt obligated to return. A shallow hole in the ground was serving as the only toilet for the entire student body, and the Tanzanian government had threatened to close the school. Don and Marianne donated $500 to finish construction of half a dozen toilets for which the villagers had run out of funds, and the school stayed open. Back in California, Don and Marianne founded the nonprofit Karimu International Help Foundation in 2008. The Swahili word karimu, meaning “generous” and “welcoming,” aptly describes Dareda’s people. To this day, Karimu has made a huge impact in the community. 30% reduction of stomach related diseases in school-age children 4 hours per day of girls time saved by not having to fetch water, now availabe for education 50% increase in doctor visits by children below 5 years 80% more women returning for pregnancy check ups 96% increase in pass rate for the Secondary School National Exam 22% more people receiving vaccinations Karimu seeks solutions to the manifold interconnected problems of the poor. That awareness came in the beginning, as it continues to do so today, from the villagers themselves. Karimu’s first principle has always been to listen to the villagers. No matter how big Karimu grows, however, we will remember that our work began with the simple acts of making friends and fixing a toilet. We intend to continue to do small things with meticulous care. Visit our website to learn more.

  • Karimu volunteer, Tupper Hull, is amazed at the impact that a relatively small donation can make when it is well-managed and focused. When Tupper heard about Karimu's impact from his daughter, Laura, who had volunteered for Karimu in 2008, he was impressed, but seeing the work of Karimu and the community was in his words, "mind-blowing."

Karimu looks to the future to change subsistence to thriving! EDUCATION Poorly educated people lack the vision andmeans to overcome the limits of a subsistence economy. Karimu unlocks income potential by strengthening education:rebuilding crumbling schools, providing learning materialsand hygiene supplies where there were none, and more. INCOME Subsistence farmers have few income opportunities. Karimu offers entrepreneurship training to teach community members to maximize incomeopportunities and offers participation in income projectswhere they can put their new skills to work. FINANCIAL SERVICES In emergencies, families mustoften sell vital assets, like the cow whose milk feeds thechildren, pushing them deeper into poverty. Karimu helpscommunity-led savings groups build financial security.

  • Karimu's integrated approach to eliminating poverty lifts 16,000 out of poverty! All challenges must be addressed to lift a community as a whole. SANITATION Dirty water causes health problems which, in turn, perpetuate the cycle of poverty. Karimu builds community-wide, easily accessed clean water systems and modern school bathrooms so all community members can healthy and work or attend school regularly. HEALTH Poor health, rooted in economic challenges, harms productivity and traps communities in poverty. Karimu builds hospitals and dispensaries, retains excellent nurses and doctors, teaches hygiene, runs vaccination campaigns, and otherwise supports the community’s healthcare needs. #donor #donors #donorschoose #donorengagement #ngovolunteer #volunteering #volunteeringmatters #volunteeringopportunities #responsabletourism #responsabletravel #livesmatter #volunteerwithus #volunteerabroad

  • "Tanzanians helping Tanzanians: The Chicken Project has begun!" Karimu’s Local Area Program Lead, Francis Wolfgang Panga has just implemented another Karimu income project. Here’s what he has to say: "Today, we successfully distributed chicks to our farmers after a month of intensive training on commercial chicken farming. During this time, they also gained valuable knowledge in savings, entrepreneurship, and building suitable chicken coops. This project has been particularly challenging and complex due to the significant initial capital required and the large number of youth and impoverished individuals who registered to participate. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the Income Team (Nelson Mattos, Mauro Goncalves Filho, and Holly Hayes) for their crucial role in meticulously planning and executing this project. We are hopeful that the outcomes of this initiative will pave the way for further opportunities to alleviate poverty among the youth and the poorest in our community. I look forward to seeing these chicks grow into healthy chickens🐓, and I can't wait to share delicious meat and eggs with you when you visit Tanzania 🍗🥚😀. " Thank you for your support, For more information please visit @Karimufoundation on Instagram.

  • “Tanzanians helping Tanzanians!” Karimu Local Program Area Lead, Francis Wolfgang Panga, organized Biochar training for 580 farmers after running a successful pilot. Here is what Francis has to say:  "Today, we successfully distributed drums for biochar production to our trainers and verifiers. A total of 30 trainers and verifiers will be working with 580 farmers across Ayalagaya and Arri to produce biochar. The process will primarily involve using corn cobs and maize stalks, with drums utilized for cobs and pits for stalks. These trainers and verifiers were carefully selected and trained by Biochar Life Kenya to ensure they are fully qualified for this task. We are confident that, under Karimu's supervision, they will produce high-quality biochar. Data collected from our previous pilot program indicates that using biochar can save a farmer up to USD 120 by reducing reliance on industrial fertilizers. This not only lowers production costs but also increases profitability for farmers. Moreover, biochar production plays a vital role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, contributing to the fight against climate change and protecting our planet. We look forward to seeing more positive results in the coming days."
