About us

The Kataly Foundation moves resources to support the economic, political, and cultural power of Black and Indigenous communities, and all communities of color. By transforming our relationship to capital, the planet, each other, and ourselves, we will redistribute and redefine wealth in a way that leads to transformation, abundance, and regeneration. Our vision is a world in which Black and brown people have the resources, power, and agency to execute their own visions for justice, well-being, and shared prosperity within their communities. We believe our fates are intertwined and ensuring self-determination for communities of color is in service of our collective liberation.

Program Officer, Mindfulness & Healing Justice at Kataly Foundation

I am still experiencing the afterglow from gathering last week with The Embodiment Institute, BE-IMAGINATIVE, Kataly Foundation and our philanthropic comrades to celebrate the release of What it Takes to Heal by Prentis Hemphill. Kasha Ho invited us to begin by reinhabiting our bodies through somatic practice, Prentis and Donna Bransford stimulated our intellects through their discussion of healing justice as an intervention & practice to support thriving social movements, and SOL Development activated our emotions and touched our souls through their musical ceremonial tribute. I am so grateful to be in community with these phenomenal leaders that hold their healing assignments with such care, intention and joy. Some of the ideas shared that I am still contemplating: > The centrality of relationships: if we know that they can break up our movements, then we are admitting that they are critical and worthy of investing in. Do we see this reflected in philanthropic priorities? > Allowing ourselves to be implicated: for those of us in philanthropy, how is our unprocessed hurt getting in the way of our ability to see what could be possible? How could it be curtailing the creativity needed in this moment? > The integration of inner and outer work: letting go of the either/or binary allows us to commit to our own healing, the healing of our lineage, and the transforming of our communities and systems. Thank you to everyone that brought your presence, smiles and tears. Special appreciation to Ayesha Walker and Debasri Ghosh for your trust and dedication.

"While I understand the temptation to jump to action, my ask instead is for deeper reflection. The first step is understanding: how are your portfolios currently invested? What is your assessment of risk? How are we considering diversity and justice in our investments? Are you prepared to make investment decisions that are values aligned, even if it means less return? What is YOUR enough?" Early this year, we kicked off a series for ImpactAlpha about the process of how we designed our investment strategy at Kataly. Our Chief Investment Officer, Lynne Hoey, examined this central question: can a foundation fully divest from Wall Street and invest in community? We have reached the end of the series, which is Lynne's reflection on what it was like to share this journey, the connections to current invest/divest campaigns happening in the world, and the dangers of jumping to action before engaging in deep reflection first. "Philanthropy cannot pretend that we are not aware of the deep systemic injustices baked into the American democratic project. Once we acknowledge those injustices, claiming false equivalencies or taking a “both sides” point of view demonstrates an unwillingness to stand firmly on the side of justice for fear of disrupting the status quo."— Nwamaka Agbo, MPA What is the responsibility of philanthropy to protect democracy? In this piece for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Nwamaka critiques the idea that polarization and divisiveness are the biggest threats to our democracy, and demonstrates how organizing and resistance have propelled our greatest democratic advancements. "The inherent challenge of being a Black woman leader with intersecting identities is that we must constantly remain vigilant and assess if the critiques we receive are legitimate based on our actions or unfounded due to anti-Blackness, sexism, or any of the other systems of oppression that shape our lives. I contend with the expectation that I must have the capacity to rise above and lead with grace and compassion in the face of, or when engaging with, the very people who are committing microaggressions against me. As Black women, we are expected to extend care and support that are often not afforded us in return." – Nwamaka Agbo, MPA Kataly's CEO, Nwamaka Agbo, MPA, wrote a piece for the latest issue of Nonprofit Quarterly about her experience as a Black woman leader in philanthropy. We are excited to celebrate the Detroit Food Commons and the grand opening of the new Detroit People's Food Co-Op, a Black-led community-owned grocery store in Waawiyatanong (Detroit)’s historic north end. "While the system of racial capitalism affords a small percentage of us to maybe find ways to do well financially, we know a) that financial well-being is temporary, not secure and ultimately relies on a system of exploitation and b) the majority of Black people are not able to thrive and be well overall in this economy. So cooperative work and building economies that center the care and needs of the whole (including the planet) are crucial to our survival. "—Dara Cooper https://lnkd.in/gw36z4w3
