August is National Breastfeeding Month. Let's celebrate the incredible journey of feeding little ones with love and care. Whether breastfeeding, pumping, or formula feeding, every mom and baby duo deserves our support and respect.    As Dr. Madeline Clark, OB/GYN, says, "The best feeding method is one that nourishes both baby and mom with love and support. Let's embrace and uplift every mom's journey. Moms who choose to either breastfeed or pump may have additional challenges with feeding their babies, and in those moments of difficulty, I ask that they first be gentle with themselves."    Other tips for breastfeeding or pumping moms:     -- Be patient. Newborns nurse frequently and for extended periods of time.   Stay hydrated. Drink enough water so that you're not regularly thirsty. Keep water nearby while nursing or pumping.   -- Relax. Stress can impact your milk supply.   -- Eat. It's important to keep up your caloric intake while breastfeeding or pumping. Your body needs about 500 extra calories a day to make breast milk.   -- Take your vitamins. Continue to take your prenatal vitamins while breastfeeding or pumping.   -- Call for help. If you're experiencing pain during breastfeeding or pumping, reach out to your OB/GYN or lactation specialist for help and guidance.   #BreastfeedingMonth #FedIsBest #SupportAllFeedingMethods

The countdown to the first day of school has begun. However, the start of the school year can bring physical, mental, and emotional challenges for your child. Consider these suggestions to help keep kids healthy as they return to school:   ✅ Let them play outside: Encourage outdoor activities. Children between 6 and 17 years old should get at least an hour of moderate to vigorous activity every day. Aerobic and muscle strengthening exercises can help improve both emotional and physical well-being.   ✅ Keep them home if they’re sick: Fevers of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, vomiting, and diarrhea could be symptoms of a contagious illness. Consult with your child’s pediatrician without delay.  ✅ Adjust their sleep schedule: A week or two before the school year begins, implement earlier bedtimes and morning wake ups.  ✅ Be ready to address mental health issues: Monitor children’s TV viewing and social media content. Set screen time limits. Remember to be a reassuring role model. Children look up to you and will mimic your emotional behavior.  “The start of the school year is an exciting time for kids and families,” said Dr. Melanie Ribbeck, a pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “However, those changes in routine may affect physical and psychological health. Caretakers, remember you are your child’s role model. Take care of your mind and body, and your child will follow your lead!”   #KelseySeyboldClinic #BackToSchool #ParentingTips #PediatricCare

Summer is here, and Houston is heating up. Hot, humid weather may result in a higher risk for a heat-related illness, such as heat stroke. Heat stroke happens when the body’s temperature-regulating system is overwhelmed, causing it to rise to 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Humidity increases this risk by making it harder for sweat to evaporate and cool the body.  “Heat stroke is serious and may cause damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles or even lead to death if not treated immediately,” says Amelia Averyt, an internist and pediatrician with Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “It’s not just a concern when spending time outdoors. It can happen indoors or in vehicles, even with your windows rolled down, which is why you should never leave children in parked cars in hot weather.”   Take these steps to prevent heat stroke:  ◽️ Stay hydrated with water and avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages   ◽️ Stay cool indoors  ◽️ Wear lightweight, loose clothing  ◽️ Arrange outdoor activities at cooler times during the day, and in shady areas 📲 To learn more about heat stroke, including signs and symptoms, visit: https://lnkd.in/gsqz726a. #KelseySeyboldClinic #SummerSafety #HeatStrokePrevention
