KPFF Consulting Engineers is proud to have contributed to the transformation of the PDX Terminal, now officially open and setting new standards in airport design! The PDX Terminal project showcases a blend of architectural beauty and engineering excellence. The signature wooden roof, crafted from locally-sourced timber, stands as an architectural masterpiece and an engineering feat, supporting expansive spans that enhance both aesthetics and energy efficiency. This design not only embodies the spirit of the Pacific Northwest but also integrates advanced seismic resilience, ensuring safety in an earthquake-prone region while maintaining the terminal’s open, airy atmosphere. Additionally, the project emphasizes sustainability through energy-efficient systems and the use of sustainable materials, aligning with PDX's commitment to environmental stewardship and making the terminal as green as it is grand. We are honored to have played a role in this iconic project. Check out the images below to see the results of this incredible collaboration. The KPFF Bridge and Transportation groups recently celebrated the grand opening of a new signature pedestrian and bicycle bridge over NE 8th Street immediately adjacent to Sound Transit’s Wilburton light rail station on the 2 Line. The $32 million bridge lets multimodal travelers bypass one of Bellevue’s most dangerous streets and unlocks the next trail segment of the EasTrail Corridor multi-use trail. More than just a functional connection, the bridge commemorates the area’s Japanese American heritage, expressed by its distinctive metal cladding, art, and poetry installations. Less than 3 weeks to go and we couldn't be more excited!
Get ready! Phase 1 of Portland International Airport is opening on August 14th, 2024. The massive 9-acre redevelopment utilizes #masstimber in an unprecedented application. Totaling 3.5 million board feet, the roof is comprised of 80-foot-long glulam beams and 35,000 pieces of intricately fabricated lattice. This project team worked closely with regional suppliers across 10 forests to promote local economic development and sustainable forestry practices. Live trees and flora intertwined with beautiful wood textures create a deep, immersive connection to nature. The intent is to let visitors feel as if they are walking through the iconic forests of the Pacific Northwest. Timberlab provided procurement strategy, custom fabrication, and mass timber installation expertise. This summer KPFF welcomes 110+ interns across 20 office locations and trust us, we love our interns!!! 2024 Seattle Structural interns did a site walk on the 30th floor of a tower, looking at post-tensioned concrete reinforcing and caught great views of the city! The apartment building will be a distinctive addition to the Belltown neighborhood.
