About us

Our mission is to help families transition out of homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing enriched with supportive services. Since 1983, LAFH has grown to become the largest provider of affordable housing in the San Fernando Valley and a best practices provider of basic needs and homeless services throughout Greater Los Angeles. LAFH is a unique housing provider because its services and real estate development address the full continuum of care for homeless and low-income households, from temporary housing to permanent rental housing, all linked to supportive services. In total we own and operate 22 properties, including three shelters and 19 permanent affordable apartment buildings. In 2011, LAFH reached 3,518 children, parents and single adults through its multi-tiered supportive housing system. The agency maintains a 92% success rate in placing families in permanent, independent housing. Each year, our wraparound service and housing continuum helps more than 500 households transition from the streets to housing stability. By balancing housing costs with basic needs, offering supportive services to increase self-sufficiency, and preserving and increasing the stock of affordable housing in LA, our work helps to build neighborhood infrastructure and inject economic growth into low-income communities.

In 2022, the legislature passed AB 1991, which delivered much needed clarity and guidance regarding tenancy to motels, hotels, and shelter providers participating in programs that provide shelter to homeless individuals. Before the passage of the legislation, shelter programs had to ‘shuffle’ homeless individuals to new locations every 30 days, an extremely disruptive practice counterproductive to the goal of assisting this vulnerable community. This morning, Governor Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 2835 and will pass into law! This bill deletes the January 1, 2025, sunset date on AB 1991, thereby permanently allowing hotels and motels to provide housing to a person enrolled in a shelter program for longer than 30 days without establishing tenancy. LAFH is proud to be a lead sponsor on this bill and it's passing!

It's a beautiful day for a grand opening! Today we joined our friends at HACLA, Councilmember Bob Blumenfield's office, Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel's office, Senator Caroline Menjivar's office, and LAFH Builds for the grand opening of Canoga Park Place - a former Project Roomkey motel that was converted to 51 units of permanent housing through Project Homekey. We're so grateful to everyone who came together to make this project possible! #endhomelessness #cd3 #projectroomkey #projecthomekey

Highlights from the recent Fuel For School with Brian and Emily Soloway Annual Event! Your efforts in helping families transitioning away from homelessness get the supplies they need for the 2024/2025 school year were truly impactful. Thanks to your commitment, we were able to cover three family sites that would have otherwise had to purchase their own school supplies. This generosity allows them to redirect those funds to other essential needs. Thank you for your support! #BacktoSchool #endhomelessness
