We are thrilled to share the green infrastructure project the students at Clancy-Maggiore Elementary for the Arts completed last week. Through our project, C.O.R.E. (Collaborating on REstoration), the fifth-grade students spent the day planting Louisiana Iris and other native plants for their new rain garden. By embracing green infrastructure over traditional grey infrastructure, the students learned the impact and importance of fostering sustainability and resilience in our community for generations to come. A huge shoutout to @epagov for funding; @gnoirissociety for Iris donations; and @restore_thebayou for their continued support!

About us
Pontchartrain Conservancy is a non-profit, membership-based organization, was established in 1989 in response to public outcry for the preservation and restoration of the Pontchartrain Basin’s ecosystem. As the public’s independent voice, the Pontchartrain Conservancy is dedicated to restoring and preserving the water quality, coast, and habitats of the entire Pontchartrain Basin. Through coordination of restoration activities, education, advocacy, monitoring of the regulatory process, and citizen action, we work in partnership with all segments of the community to reclaim the Basin for this and future generations. The Pontchartrain Conservancy is a non-profit organization consisting of a board of directors representing Basin parishes and regulatory agencies. The Pontchartrain Basin is a 10,000 square mile watershed encompassing 16 Louisiana parishes. The land use of the region is both rural and urban and is the most densely populated region in Louisiana, including metro New Orleans and the state capital, Baton Rouge. It is one of the largest estuarine systems in the Gulf of Mexico containing over 22 essential habitats. The Basin's topography ranges from rolling woodlands in the north to coastal marshes in the south, with the 630 square mile Lake Pontchartrain as its centerpiece.

They are bordered by the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet (AKA MR-GO) and Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) on the eastern side and the 40 Arpent Levee and Canal on the west side. Working alongside community stakeholders, this group uses native plant restoration projects to reforest the wetlands, resulting in improved ecosystem services, including mitigating the impacts of hurricanes, higher quality habitat and a stronger connection between communities and the landscape. These restoration projects are a tool to build capacity in the surrounding communities by educating and engaging residents in the important work of coastal restoration.
