Our staff showed how they go beyond clinical care to help Tru and family celebrate a birthday on our porch. Tru’s family brought gifts and guests to the hospital to celebrate a family milestone. Tru’s team were on hand to monitor his vitals while at the party and helped prepare Tru to travel downstairs to the porch. Summer birthdays are always special and we’re honored to help patients and families gather for these special moments.

As we continue our mission to provide exceptional care at La Rabida Children's Hospital, we want to celebrate Disability Pride Month with the American Hospital Association by creating a more inclusive and understanding world for everyone. We will always work to adopt patient-centered, respectful language when working with our patients and speaking with families. Take a look at the American Hospital Association’s People Matter, Words Matter poster to learn how to use person-first language in health care settings and focus on the use of caring and compassionate language when speaking to people with disabilities. #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityAwareness #Inclusion #LaRabidaChildrensHospital

In the 1970s, Michael Groves stayed at La Rabida for six months to be treated for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. As a young boy, he suffered a lot of pain in his knees and often woke up with painful knees, especially when it rained. His older brother even helped him with exercises they learned at La Rabida to relieve the pain. Michael's primary doctor at the time was Dr. Grossman, whom he thought was amazing because he knew all of the kids' names and continued to see him for several years after he was discharged. Today Michael is a council supervisor at an oil refinery and gives back to La Rabida regularly out of gratitude for his wonderful care. It was good to see you Michael and thanks for your continued support!

Aaliyah Drakeford has planned on entering pediatrics since she was just five years old. As part of Aaliyah’s internship at the Obama Foundation, we invited her to spend a couple of days shadowing our nurses. She’s planning to attend Jackson State University this fall after recently graduating from Hyde Park Academy. Aaliyah’s godmother was a nurse, and she looks forward to carrying that tradition forward. We love being able to share our insights and expertise with the next generation of pediatric care providers. You’ve got a bright future ahead of you Aaliyah!
