It's the 30th anniversary of the term 'Reproductive Justice'! ✨ Coined by Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice in June 1994, the term is rooted in the Combahee River Collective and Black feminism of the 1970s. RJ mixes social justice with reproductive health, addressing the broader issues faced by women of color, women from low-income communities, and transgender and gender-expansive people. #ReproductiveJustice #RJMovement #RJEducation

Shout out to our friends at National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice for underscoring the particular importance of #EMTALA to latina/xs and im/migrants, who (due to Medicaid coverage gaps and other systemic barriers to care) disproportionately rely on emergency rooms to access health care.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 A final decision regarding the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) was just announced by SCOTUS 🔦 Here's our full statement from our Executive Director Lupe M. R.: "While we’re relieved that the Supreme Court dismissed this case, they fell short of upholding protections for pregnant patients and ensuring that anti-abortion extremists can’t deny them emergency abortion care. Since the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision to overturn Roe v. Wade two years ago, access to abortion care has been decimated and we’ve seen time and again that pregnancy care has also become more difficult to access and many pregnant people are being denied the care they need.     Im/migrants, Latinas/xs, and other communities of color visit emergency rooms at higher rates because of systemic barriers to health care. For now, they are still entitled to the care they need to protect their health and lives but we know anti-abortion politicians and judges won’t stop trying to deny them this care. No one should be denied care in a medical emergency, no matter who they are or where they live.     Unfortunately, we know that these attacks on our freedom will continue as part of anti-abortion extremists’ ultimate goal to ban abortion nationwide. Legal challenges like this case do incredible damage in our communities; causing confusion, fear, and uncertainty about abortion care, which makes it much easier for misinformation to spread and deters people from getting the care they need, especially Latinas/xs, who are already the most affected by abortion bans.     The National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice will continue to build power in Latino/x communities across the country and work to secure the federal right to abortion care so that everyone has access to the health care they need. We will not stop until we create a country with true reproductive freedom for all."

In conjunction with today’s two year anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood’s Action Fund released a new analysis on the impact of abortion bans and has joined the Abortion Access Now Campaign, collaborating with other health, rights, and justice organizations. This landmark ruling led many states to change their laws; 43% of women of reproductive age, plus trans and nonbinary people, now live in states that ban or limit abortion — that means 28 million women of reproductive age live in states with an abortion ban. Check out our joint op-ed feature today in @newsweek 🗞️ “New research from Intersections of Our Lives—a collective of three leading women of color-led reproductive justice organizations—suggests that while majorities of women of color say they are very motivated to vote in this year’s elections, motivation can increase when policymakers prioritize the issues that most impact our daily lives. And right now, we don’t see that happening.   … despite what’s been reported, AAPI, Black, and Latina/x women are  unified in strong support of access to abortion care. Over 7 in 10 women of color believe abortion should be legal. Abortion is one of the many intersectional issues that impacts reproductive justice and our communities' ability to access essential health care. Recent and ongoing attacks on abortion rights disproportionately impact women of color and immigrants and negatively impact our health outcomes...   The power of our communities cannot remain ignored by policymakers and politicians.
