I firmly believe that starting a business during college is one of the most empowering experiences a student can undertake. It’s not just about gaining business acumen but also about expanding your network and learning valuable, sometimes humbling, life lessons. Last night, I witnessed a new generation of student entrepreneurs at Davidson College’s annual venture fund competition share their story and vision for the future. These ambitious students are tackling significant challenges, from combating counterfeit prescription drugs to innovating rights management for musicians. Six years ago, Lucid Bots was fortunate to win this very competition. This pivotal moment allowed me to graduate early and dedicate myself to the business full-time, providing Lucid Bots with the essential momentum it needed during those early days. It’s hard to envision our company taking flight without the positive uplift we received from this experience. Fast forward to last night, and I had the honor of watching Thomas Athey, a senior at Davidson whom I’ve mentored for two years, win the competition with his venture, MESA. His company is set to revolutionize how intellectual property is organized and protected among music collaborators (send any musicians in your network his way!). While winning the competition six years ago was a life-changing event for me, having the opportunity to support the success of the next wave of entrepreneurs like Thomas has been even more gratifying.
