‘𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡’ 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – with the announcement in late July that SpaceX is moving its Dragon spacecraft splashdowns from off the coast of Florida to the West Coast starting next year, Long Beach city officials said. That means SpaceX will be expanding its Port of Long Beach facility at Pier T from just over six acres to 15 acres. It will come from both dry and submerged land, and office and manufacturing space. “Excited to share a Space Beach update! Long Beach will be the new home to @SpaceX’s Dragon recovery vessel as their West Coast Recovery Operations team based out of the @portoflongbeach will welcome back both @NASA and other private astronauts who are returning to Earth from orbit and beyond,” Mayor Rex Richardson said on X, formerly Twitter. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡, who shared the news today that its "Small Business Spending Surpasses $55 Million", exceeding its goal to broaden opportunities to more firms by 15%. The Port of Long Beach's commitment to include more small businesses among its vendors and contractors continues to be extraordinarily successful, broadening access to port-related construction and professional services contracts. The program, which began in 2004, saw the highest rate of participation in 2022 (48.9%) and again this year in 2023 (41.8%). "The Port of Long Beach is a job creator for our community and beyond, but we recognize it's not enough to merely service as an economic engine," said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Bonnie Lowenthal. "This program was created to ensure there's a place for smaller companies to benefit from the economic opportunities."
