About us

Leadership Kentucky, created in 1984 as a non-profit educational organization, brings together a selected group of people that possess a broad variety of leadership abilities, career accomplishments, and volunteer activities to gain insight into complex issues facing the state. Our goal is to prepare our participants to take an active role in advancing the state for the common good. By fostering understanding among community and regional leaders, Leadership Kentucky graduates bring a fresh and informed perspective to their communities and companies, serving as important participants in the unified effort to shape Kentucky’s future. Through a series of seven monthly, two-day sessions, held in various locations in the state, our participants are educated about the state of Kentucky and its challenges. They meet and talk with Kentucky’s current leaders and through a systematic educational program, explore the state’s opportunities, needs and resources. Kentucky’s rich cultural heritage and its unique diversity are woven throughout the curriculum that features the state’s economy, education, health and human services, law and justice, and the environment. In addition, Leadership Kentucky provides a thought-provoking experience focusing on the attributes of leadership and what it means to be a leader. By visiting various regions of the Commonwealth, class participants develop an enhanced view and a new meaning to the word community that spans the entire state.

  • As we wrapped up our BRIGHT London & Corbin session at the beautiful CHI St. Joseph Hospital, Kandice Whitehouse and Michele Carlisle showed us the real life game of ‘Chutes and Ladders’ that thousands of unhomed individuals and families across the state face each day. Then Jordyne Carmack helped us learn how to build our personal brand by identifying values, passions and skills and investing in ourselves. Each of us have something unique to offer! Thank you to our sponsors for making this BRIGHT session possible!

Substance use disorder affects us all regardless of whether we personally know someone who suffers. Today the BRIGHT class heard powerful and inspiring messages about the physical, emotional, and economic effects of SUD on our families and communities at the beautiful Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. White Flag Ministry then shared their model of help and hope for some of Corbin’s most vulnerable citizens. This afternoon we strolled along the creek to the Corbin Public Library where Kellene Turner shared her passion for the arts and a panel of several leaders provided wisdom and practical steps for serving on a board. We concluded the evening downtown at the delicious Wrigley Tap Room & Eatery and then explored the Depot Street Pop Up Market and enjoyed local live music.

BRIGHT session three started at the gorgeous Heart of Grace Farm in London. We continued our ADD discussions from last month before Beth Silvers guided the class with practical ways to Master the Art of Difficult Conversations. The class then headed to CHI St. Joseph Hospital for a reception with the LKY Board members featuring local cuisine and sweet treats. Kentucky Trivia with Tommy Druen tested the group’s knowledge of all things Kentucky as they enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by Local Honey. Thank you to each of these venues and their staff for the generous use of their space and hospitality.

  • 📣📣SPECIAL GUEST ANNOUNCEMENT: The 2024 LKY Golf Outing will feature Eastern Kentucky University Men's Basketball Coach A.W. Hamilton as guest speaker. If you haven't registered yet, this is just one more reason to join us on Monday! Not a golfer? Join us for dinner and hear what Coach Hamilton has to say. Email [email protected] to get your ticket TODAY! More about Coach Hamilton: A.W. Hamilton led EKU to the 2023-24 Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season Championship. It was the first regular season conference title for the Colonels in 45 years (1979) and the seventh in program history. Hamilton was chosen as the ASUN Coach of the Year and the NABC District III Coach of the Year. He is the first coach in program history to be named conference coach of the year two times. In his first six seasons as head coach, the Colonels broke 68 program records. In 2022-23, Hamilton led the team to 23 wins, the third most in one season in program history. In 2020-21, EKU won 22 games, tied for the fourth-most in program history. Hamilton has coached two of the five winningest teams ever in addition to one of only seven regular season conference championship teams. He is one of only three coaches in program history to lead the Colonels to multiple 20-win seasons. Hamilton is the only EKU coach to lead his team to 12 or more conference wins in a season four different times. Born in Georgetown, Kentucky, he played college basketball for Wake Forest and Marshall, where he graduated in 2005. Hamilton starred at Scott County High School in the late 1990s, leading the Cardinals to a state championship in 1998 and a state runner-up finish in 1999. He was named first team all-state and played in the prestigious Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game following his senior season.

  • Thank you to Casey Jones Distillery for a wonderful evening during our visit to Hopkinsville! The space and atmosphere were a beautiful backdrop to our class panel presentations on the legal world in Kentucky, as well as the intersection between tourism and the arts. While there, we heard from retired Justice Bill Cunningham, author of "On Bended Knees: The Night Rider Story", a non-fictional tale of the Kentucky and Tennessee tobacco wars and farmers' revolt against the impoverishing tobacco prices of the "Duke Trust."

  • If you haven't been to U.S. Army Fort Campbell, you are missing out! The Class of 2024 is forever changed by our time spent with the incredible soldiers and civilians that live and work on the base. We heard from COL Travis McIntosh who talked to us about the 101st Airborne Division, the Army's ONLY air assault division, the Four Fights of the 101st, and the evolution of vertical envelopment, including new aircraft that are currently being built! Our class members were touched by the service and sacrifice of COL McIntosh, and his family who has moved 13 times throughout his career, but wouldn't change a thing because as he said "America is worth it." Some of our more adventurous class members got personalized instruction from SFC Matthew Conrad, SSG Morris and Team 2 on the do's and don't's of repelling. Rule #1, keep your head up and your feet down. Check out our Reels to see some of the days flyers! We heard from COL Christopher Cook of the 160th SOAR. He talked to us about the elite Night Stalkers, the assessment and training that each soldier undergoes to become a part of this incredible team, and their guarantee of time on target, plus or minus 30 seconds anywhere in the world. Team member Tom Mattingly (civilian) then took us to the Night Stalker Memorial where the names of 104 soldiers are etched and forever held for their bravery and commitment. #nightstalkersdontquit Special thanks to MSG Reginald Montiero and Suzy Yates, Ft. Campbell Community Relations Officer, who made sure that we were well cared for and ON TIME! Credit: Ginger Davis, LKY Class of 2024

  • Hopkinsville is #KentuckyProud! While our visit last week focused on agriculture and the unforgettable Ft. Campbell, what our class participants truly learned about the community is that it is proud. Proud of its people, farms, work ethic, and progress. We heard from Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Jonathan Shell who talked about the partnerships his office is forging to support all Kentuckians. He focused on #foodismedicine and work with the Kentucky Hospital Association to place healthy, locally grown food in hospital cafeterias and vending machines, and ensure that healthy food is part of a patient's discharge plan. We stopped by Agri-Chem, a cooperative that specializes in crop fertilization and protection. David Buchanan, General Manager, highlighted their use of technology and soil mapping to guide each farmer's use of the specific treatments needed to maximize growth on their land. We also heard from Donnie Dixon, a local tobacco farmer, and Harvey Zimmerman, an Amish dairy and beef cattle farmer. They reminded us that while technology is a huge part of ag in Kentucky, farming is still very much a hands on operation. We closed out our time in Christian County at the Cooperative Extension Service and heard from David Brame, owner of Brame Farms; Joseph Sisk, KY Grain Producer; and Wayne Hunt, CEO of H&R Agri-Power. Each of these gentlemen shared how they became farmers, for some it was always a dream and for others it was something they never thought they would do. They stressed the importance of farmers having a seat at the table and described their concerted effort for recruiting farmers to serve on local boards and commissions. While the paths to and roles in agriculture for each of these individuals are very different, the pride in the work they do is a common thread.
