2021 Fellow Emily Neely's Fellowship at Legal Aid Of West Virginia allowed her to provide restorative justice mediations to families impacted by substance use disorder in her hometown of Martinsburg, West Virginia. "Recovery takes a lot of time, [and] I'm not sure our judicial system has caught on to that," she shared in a new video created for our 2023 Scales of Justice celebration. "For some, the dispute can be resolved outside of the courtroom, just by having a conversation. That's why, with the support of an Equal Justice Works Fellowship, I formulated this idea of offering mediation and restorative justice practices to low-income families for free."
