Today, we remember Joli Ann Leichtag z”l on the 17th anniversary of her passing. In her life, Joli Ann’s career as an educator drove her to champion justice for all children. Because of her passion for education, Leichtag Foundation made a grant in her memory to the San Marcos Promise (now Project Next) to help high schoolers prepare for life after graduation. Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School in Vista was dedicated in her honor on October 24, 2008. Joli Ann continues to inspire our work at the Foundation and is the driving force behind our desire to always continue learning. Shabbat Shalom. Did you catch the Jerusalem Youth Chorus on America’s Got Talent? A Leichtag Foundation partner and grantee, this incredible group of young Israelis and Palestinians wowed the judges with their breathtaking rendition of “Home” by Phillip Phillips. Amer Abu Arqub, the Chorus’s Executive Director, is an alum of the Jerusalem Philanthropic Initiatives’ Jerusalema, which is an accelerator for Jerusalemites of diverse backgrounds who are interested in public leadership with a perspective of shared society and common good. The Chorus also features several members of the Jerusalem Model. Kol hakavod, mabrouk, and bravo to these young leaders for their stunning performance and their important commitments to fostering empathy, navigating complexity, leadership, and relationships. The Chorus goes beyond singing together, delving deeper into one another’s identities, life experiences, communal narratives, religious traditions, and national histories through dialogue, all within the safe space of the musical ensemble and the strong personal bonds and community it creates. They are a testament to the model and resilience of Jerusalem as a shared society. The Wolf Prize, an international award granted in Israel, recognizes outstanding achievements that advance science and the arts in the interest of humanity. We are excited to share that one of this year’s recipients is Professor Joanne Chory of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, a tenant of Leichtag Commons. Recognized as one of the most influential plant biologists of the modern era, Professor Chory studies the genetic codes of plants and uses plants to help fight climate change, conducting some of this instrumental research at Leichtag Commons. Leichtag Foundation congratulates Professor Chory and the Salk Institute for their incredible and important work! Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ddwADdhE Shabbat Shalom 🌱

Last week we had the honor of hosting a Young Adult delegation from Sha’ar HaNegev here at The Hive at Leichtag Commons. This group has shown incredible resilience and strength in the aftermath of October 7, and we were so grateful to provide a space for them to connect, heal, and create lasting memories together. Many thanks to Jewish Federation of San Diego for helping us support the young adults of San Diego’s sister city in Israel.

Our neighbors at Coastal Roots Farm are in the news! To close out The Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Fesival 2024, the farm will present an evening of original eco-theater, dance, and music by some of California’s most exciting, forward-thinking artists. Earth-based Jewish wisdom will ground the event and serve as inspiration and a jumping-off point for the artists. As we all navigate the darkness of the climate crisis and the environmental injustices of today, art can light our way and help us see, feel, and act with renewed joy and determination. Sunday, June 30. More info here: https://lnkd.in/gyUNyrsa Shabbat Shalom 🌴

This year, Tel Aviv’s annual Pride festival took on new meaning. The city’s Pride and Hope Assembly was marked by hundreds of rainbow flags with an expanded yellow stripe to show support for the hostages in Gaza and their families. “The Pride flag is a symbol of freedom,” said Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai. “This year, we demand freedom for the hostages who are held captive by Hamas.” Read more HERE: https://lnkd.in/gyG9FTCY Shabbat Shalom 🎗️

Over the weekend, four hostages — Noa Argamani, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov and Shlomi Ziv — were rescued from Gaza. This week, when Jews around the world sit around their tables to celebrate the dairy-themed holiday of Shavuot, Shlomi Ziv will be able to enjoy his favorite rose cookies - featured in the “Shavuot of Longing” recipe book from the Hostages and Missing Familes Forum. For the families of these four released hostages, their yearning to be reunited with their loved ones after eight long months has been answered. But for the families of 120 hostages who remain in captivity in Gaza, it is still a “Shavuot of Longing.” Consider making a donation to the Hostages and Missing Familes Forum to receive this recipe book in either physical or digital format.
