Why insulin resistance creates a vicious cycle of fat gain Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, describes how insulin drives fat gain. Understanding insulin resistance: - Insulin is a hormone, and it’s a growth factor. - It makes cells grow and divide. - It is helpful when you’re a growing child, are in puberty, or are pregnant. - We are more insulin resistant at these times to support growth. - However, insulin also drives fat growth. - Insulin is released in response to a rise in glucose (blood sugar) after a meal. - It tells our cells to let glucose in for energy. - If we consume too much of the foods that drive insulin release (i.e., sugar and refined carbohydrates), insulin resistance will result. - Insulin resistance occurs when cells can’t handle the glucose load and stop responding to insulin’s signaling. - Ultimately, insulin drives fat gain, and fat leads to more insulin resistance. - Fat loss will not occur unless there’s a reduction in insulin release. - You can reduce insulin release by keeping blood sugar more stable. https://lnkd.in/g39jZqgT #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

How to make better choices at the grocery store Levels Advisor Mark Hyman, MD, and Levels Co-Founder and author of “Good Energy” Casey Means, MD, discuss. They provide an example with the snack bar aisle, which offers so many choices with so many different claims. These claims can lead people to think that a certain bar, like a Clif Bar, is healthy. However, based on Levels continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data, Clif Bars have a glucose (blood sugar) spike of 42 mg/dL. That’s almost 10 points higher than a Snickers bar, which is considered candy. A CGM helps you track how foods impact your blood sugar so that you can tailor your food choices accordingly. High blood sugar is tied to many chronic diseases. Maintaining stable blood sugar is a key component of metabolic health, which impacts overall health. https://lnkd.in/gRXmtQuX #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

What actually causes high cholesterol? Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD explains the different types of cholesterol and what drives cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol is necessary for the body. In fact, our bodies have a method for manufacturing it. But cholesterol gets a bad rap because of confusion about the types—and which type actually drives cardiovascular disease. Understanding the different types of cholesterol can help you tailor your diet and lifestyle habits for better metabolic health. Keep in mind that the pattern of all types of cholesterol taken together, rather than individual levels, matters the most. Types of cholesterol: - high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: “good” cholesterol - low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—two types: large buoyant (lbLDL) and small dense (sdLDL) - very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL): represented as triglycerides Understanding the types of LDL: - lbLDL: neutral when it comes to cardiovascular health and is elevated via fat consumption - sdLDL: drives atherosclerosis and is elevated via sugar consumption What you can do: - Reduce sugar consumption to minimize sdLDL. - Get regular exercise to elevate HDL. What are the worst foods for metabolism and blood sugar? At Levels, we have data. Here, Levels Co-Founder Casey Means, MD and Levels Advisor Mark Hyman, MD share about the worst foods in the Levels dataset of more than 51 million glucose data points. 🥣 Cereals: Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms, etc. 📈 Cereals generate a glucose response of about a 60 ml/dL or above. 🍯 “We think honey is good, nut is good, and Cheerios are good: Just a wolf in sheep’s clothing. These are basically desserts for breakfast: 75% sugar. If you can do one thing to change your biology quickly, it’s get rid of any starch or sugar for breakfast.” —Mark Hyman, MD 🥧 “I will up the ante here. It’s much worse than eating dessert for breakfast. Peach pie has an average glucose spike of 46 ml/DL. Cinnamon Toast Crunch is 59.” —Casey Means, MD https://lnkd.in/gNkuDZha #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

Why fructose is bad for you For A Whole New Level, Levels Advisor David Perlmutter, MD, and Levels Co-Founder and author of “Good Energy” Casey Means, MD, discuss the problems with high uric acid and the foods and drinks that can lead to elevated levels. Fructose, including high-fructose corn syrup, elevates uric acid in the body. Uric acid can cause gout and is a marker of worsened metabolic health. It also encourages fat production and storage and drives mitochondrial dysfunction, which can harm brain and cardiovascular health. Fructose is present in fruit. When we consume whole fruits, we consume fructose in small amounts, and it isn’t harmful, thanks to the fiber and vitamin C that are also in whole fruits. However, when we consume fruit juice (which is absent of fiber) or high-fructose corn syrup, we consume much more fructose than the body can handle at once. High-fructose corn syrup was invented in the 1970s, and it is now ubiquitous in many ultra-processed foods, sodas, sports drinks, and more. https://lnkd.in/gSdKknYv #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar
