This morning, Talus Bio, an Life Science Washington Institute WIN venture, announced $11.2M in venture capital funding to advance its drug discovery program for hard-to-treat diseases. The Seattle biotech’s platform brings biochemical analysis into living cells, allowing researchers to see how drugs interact with small proteins that turn genes on and off. Abnormal gene expression is a common point of origin of many diseases, including cancer. The University of Washington in Seattle will receive up to $21.1M out of $150M awarded to researchers across the country in a new phase of the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative led by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. The UW is one of three universities, along with Tulane University and Rice University, that were awarded funding to develop new ways of visualizing individual cells on the surface of a tumor after its removal. The overall goal of the Cancer Moonshot initiative is reduce the cancer death rate by at least half by 2047 and improve the experience for people affected by cancer. Sana Biotechnology, Inc. celebrated the beginning of a new chapter on its journey to make drugs that treat complicated diseases, cutting the ribbon outside their new manufacturing facility in Bothell, Washington. Sana broke ground on the 80,000 square-foot facility one year ago after switching from a site in Fremont, California. Steve Harr, CEO of Sana, said Sana expects to spend more than $500M on manufacturing sciences and building up manufacturing capability at the new building. With the University of Washington’s Bothell campus just around the corner and other drug manufacturing companies in the neighborhood, Harr called the surrounding region a wonderful area for talent.
