Preserving the right to a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for all children is essential to our mission at LUV. Our indigenous partners provide safe spaces to help children, like Nalo*, in our anti-trafficking network grow into active changemakers for their own lives and communities. Born under tragic circumstances, Nalo’s mother was violently attacked while pregnant and later died from her injuries during an emergency cesarean section. Miraculously, Nalo survived. However, when he was abandoned by his father, he was left in the care of his aunt, who struggled to make ends meet. Desperate and afraid for Nalo’s future, she reached out to Lift Up the Vulnerable’s indigenous partners for help. Because of the sanctuary LUV provides in war-torn nations, Nalo had a place to call home. He is now a three-year-old boy living safely in our anti-trafficking network where he can play and learn with other children his own age. We are so grateful to be able to provide essential care, education, and opportunities to vulnerable children like Nalo. Since conflict erupted across Sudan in April 2023, the country is facing a new level of catastrophe. According to UNICEF, “More than half the population (nearly 26 million people) are now facing crisis levels of hunger, and 14 areas have been declared ‘at risk of famine.’” We call on our community to join us in prayer for relief and support for those suffering this urgent hunger crisis. In South Sudan, with the world’s third lowest literacy rate, ongoing conflict and economic instability severely limit access to quality education. This lack of schooling exposes children and women to heightened risks like human trafficking. • 70% of South Sudanese are younger than 30, and half of them can neither read nor write. • 1 in 4 of school-attending children are female. • 2.8 million children are not in school in South Sudan.
