On World Suicide Prevention Day, remember to lean into those difficult conversations. How to respond to risky behavior like not wearing a seatbelt/helmet, driving recklessly, a cavalier attitude about medication, or trying out daredevil activities suddenly: acknowledge - don’t just ignore what they’re doing share - let your friend know that this makes you worried open up - ask your friend if they would like to share more How to respond to giving things away, including giving away meaningful objects, giving away items they use regularly, or giving spontaneous gifts accompanied by emotional conversations: thank - share how much you appreciate the gift ask - “what made you want to give this to me now?” open up - ask your friend if they would like to share more How to respond to pulling away like lack of interest in future plans, lethargic attitude during social events, frequent cancelling of plans or declining invitations to hang out, or increased irritability: be gentle - offer low-energy alternative to hangouts check-in - let your friend know you are here for them stay aware - talk with other friends to see if they notice the same patterns How to respond to negative phrases like “you’d be better off without me,” “if I’m even here next year,” “I won’t be around for much longer,” or “it doesn’t matter.” acknowledge - don’t just brush past what they said affirm - find a way to tell your friend that you care open up - ask your friend if they would like to share more

Today, we are thinking of all those affected by the violence in Apalachee and are recommitting to our mission: helping those who struggle with connection, mental health, or trauma. We can’t change the public mental health system, gun regulation, or school safety in a day, but one solution to school shootings IS under our control: connection. Many point to mental illness or disorders like OCD as a predictor of this school shooter profile, but this is not entirely accurate. Children who seek treatment and support for mental health concerns lead fulfilling, peaceful lives, so what is the deeper issue? Due to minimal data, it is impossible to accurately predict which kids will turn to mass violence. “A ubiquitous condition experienced by almost all mass school shooters, however, is the social isolation produced by dysfunctional families.” (Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, 2023) The vast majority of shooters are white males, a demographic that typically experiences social privilege; but most of these individuals wrote about extreme marginalization and isolation. “A 14-year-old shooter stated in court, ‘I felt like I wasn’t wanted by anyone, especially my mom.’” (Robin M. Kowalski, Ph.D., 2022) There is no excuse for these actions. However, we can see a pattern. Many youth are bullied by peers and marginalized by society as a whole; the key difference, it appears, is having a non-violent community to turn to. Connected families who experience stressors learn to respond with empathy; disconnected families are more prone to react with violence. For a real life example of how connection can offset violent habits, listen to the Ted Talk: “I was almost a school shooter,” by Aaron Stark

Great blog. Yes we need to focus our partnerships on what matters long-term. "If you want to find a Life Partner, look for someone with the following traits: loyalty, kindness, emotional stability, and a growth mindset. You want a person with whom you can grow, make hard decisions, and argue with constructively."

Rural areas are a healthcare desert, and they have been for a long time. A 2019 Health Affairs study reports the urgent need for mental health care, and isolation during the pandemic only exacerbated these issues. Noah Kahan is on a mission to help. While “Stick Season” was topping the charts, Kahan was raising $2 Million for mental health access to underserved communities through his initiative, The Busyhead Project. Kahan knows from his childhood in rural Vermont how difficult it can be to get help.Busyhead provides grant money to groups that serve geographically isolated areas, indigenous communities, LGBTQ+ groups, and more. By funding pre-existing, specialized groups, the money meets pertinent needs in many different communities. Studies still show a pattern of isolation in non-urban environments, but thanks to digital access and people like Kahan, it is getting better.
