Meet United States Marine Corps Veteran Edward Schrank, who served our country for 16 years and is a seven-time cancer survivor. Edward’s illness, caused by toxic chemical exposure, brought unimaginable challenges. But with the help of Luke’s Wings, his life took a turn for the better. “When I was connected with Luke’s Wings, doctors told me that they were going to remove my jaw and that I would never speak or eat again, and I would probably lose my life,” Edward shared. Despite these grim prospects, Luke’s Wings provided him and his family with the support they needed to focus on his survival through travel assistance. Our CEO, Fletcher Doud Gill Sr., has had the pleasure of knowing Edward’s family over the years, and considers it an honor to call him a friend. “We have flown him to cancer treatments in the morning and had him home before dinner with his wife,” he said. Edward’s story is a testament to the impact of our mission. Help us continue to support veterans like him by donating today: lukeswings.org #WoundedWarrior #Veteran #CancerSurvivor #TravelAssistance

About us
Luke’s Wings is a 501(c)3 military nonprofit dedicated to the support of wounded, ill, and injured service members by providing families with the means to visit during their recovery and rehabilitation through the gift of flight. Luke’s Wings becomes a vital resource for emergency and long-term travel needs; providing over 13,000 flights to date. Unlike other organizations, we do not place a limitation on the number of flights provided to each family nor on the relationship of those traveling. Furthermore, we pride ourselves on quick response time and flexibility, ensuring families can be together for every surgery, emergency, birthday, holiday or time of need. In 2008, Sarah Wingfield met Luke Shirley, a wounded service member, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Like many, Luke was taken to a hospital that would best suit his recovery needs, not the geographical location of his loved ones; leaving him alone for most of his recovery process. The Wounded Warrior Transportation Assistance Program was born from that very conversation and continues to grow and support families in need of not only travel assistance but of the emotional and physical support that comes with loved ones being present during the recovery process.

Did you know the government only provides three flights for loved ones to be with a service member upon their initial injury? That's where Luke's Wings steps in. Founded in 2008, Luke’s Wings realized that the government doesn't always provide enough flights for families to be bedside during long-term recovery. Families often face the burden of traveling back and forth on their own, balancing their everyday lives with their new reality. Luke’s Wings fills this gap by offering complimentary airfare to wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans, and their loved ones. These flights keep military families connected during recovery and rehabilitation, providing essential mental, physical, emotional, and financial support. Luke's Wings recently had the honor of flying the family of Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell to New Haven, CT, where he was laid to rest earlier this month. Officer Mitchell was tragically shot and killed on May 30 while responding to a chaotic shooting in Minneapolis' Whittier neighborhood. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. At Luke's Wings, our main goal is to keep our families flying, and we rely on donors like you to make this possible! A recent beneficiary shared, "Luke's Wings helped me through an incredibly difficult time when my brother in the Air Force had an accident. It was my worst nightmare. Luke's Wings arranged all the travel, allowing me to meet him across the country from Washington to Florida while I was on active duty. Thankfully, my brother is much better now, and I am so grateful for such an amazing organization." Each year on June 27, National PTSD Awareness Day highlights the impact of post-traumatic stress on those affected. A study by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs shows that veterans are particularly vulnerable to developing PTSD due to their increased exposure to traumatic events. At Luke's Wings, we have met many wounded warriors who suffer from PTSD. Our mission is to support them in their times of need.
