Meet MSF Psychologist Fatima Ismail. Just like the patients she receives in Adré, Chad, she is part of the refugee community that fled Sudan after the war started in April 2023. Fatima studied psychology in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, and, in 2021 she joined MSF in the El Genina teaching hospital in the Darfur region. She fled to eastern Chad in search of safety, and arrived in Adré in June 2023. Despite her own displacement, Fatima continues to provide #mentalhealth support, including for survivors of sexual violence.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is the world's leading independent international medical relief organization, implementing and managing medical projects in close to 72 countries worldwide and as a worldwide movement of 25 associations, 24 sections, 17 offices and 6 operational entities. We observe neutrality in situations of conflict, and impartiality in the name of medical ethics. To ensure our independence, the majority of our funding is provided by private donations from members of the public. Additional funding may come from foundations, governments and international institutions.

In September 2023, MSF teams started providing specialized psychotherapeutic services for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of the war. Our psychologists currently see dozens of patients for weekly consultations in a new mental health center in Vinnytsia in west-central Ukraine. But it is common for people with PTSD to be reluctant to seek help. This is often exacerbated by the stigma that exists around mental health care. So, to raise awareness of PTSD and inform people about its symptoms, we conduct sessions with general practitioners and with veterans' associations. We also work with local organizations to run creative workshops and art activities on the signs of PTSD for people displaced from regions like Mariupol or Kherson. At the UN High-level Meeting (#UNHLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR) in September, governments will sign a global political declaration committing to respond to AMR. As a medical humanitarian organisation, we see the impact of AMR every day, especially in many of the low-resource settings in which we operate. Ahead of the UNHLM on AMR, here are our 4 recommendations for the declaration 👇 We call on governments to: 🎯 Prioritise universal access to effective diagnostics and drugs. R&D of new antibiotics must target the most urgent global public health needs and have conditions making them affordable and accessible to all. 🎯 Strengthen infection prevention and control, and invest in health infrastructure to reduce transmission of resistant infections 🎯 Invest in lab infrastructure, training and innovations in low-resource settings to expand access to testing, enable proper diagnosis, and prevent, detect and control AMR more effectively 🎯 Prioritise community and civil society engagement in national AMR plans, governance, and funding decisions at the international level 🔗 https://lnkd.in/db-iY8X6
