Last night’s Sea Change: Gulf of Maine event made waves! Thank you to our friends at NOVA | PBS & GBH, our venue University of Southern Maine, and everyone who spent their Friday evening with us! 🐋🦞FASCINATING FACT: Did you know? Both Right whales and lobsters depend on teensy, high-fat crustaceans called copepods. 🌡️ Temperature changes in the Gulf of Maine impact copepod emergence. This causes volatility in the food chain for Right whales, who need thousands of pounds a day, and baby lobsters, who depend on them when they are vulnerable, tiny, and hungry to grow. Throughout the screening and panel with experts, we absorbed breathtaking imagery and eye-opening scientific reports that document the impacts of a warming planet. Acclaimed National Geographic photographer Brian Skerry, lobsterman and marine biologist Curtis Brown, film producer Chun-Wei Li, ecologist and kelp forest pro Dr. Douglas Rasher, and NOVA veteran and co-executive producer john bredar engaged in a panel moderated by Irwin Gratz. Film producer and Sea Change writer Stella Cha was also in the house. Watch Episode 2 of Sea Change next Wednesday at 9 on Maine Public Television, and find the series on PBS Passport or on NOVA’s YouTube channel. 🌊

Save the date! August 24, join Maine Public for "An Evening With Nick Schifrin – Reporting on War in the 21st Century" at the Camden Opera House. Nick Schifrin the award-winning PBS News Hour Foreign Affairs and Defense Correspondent has covered wars in Ukraine, in Gaza, Syria, Afghanistan and more. Though war reporting can leave journalists disillusioned and cynical, one of Schifrin's guiding qualities is empathy, which, he said, supplies the purpose that inspires him to continue his work. “We must not only voice empathy, but also figure out which questions to ask," Schifrin told an audience of university students last year. Don't miss your chance to hear from this remarkable journalist at the Camden Conference's next event.

Yesterday we broadcast Maine Calling LIVE from the Gracie Theatre at Husson University in Bangor in partnership with AARP Maine. The topic of the day - elder financial abuse - is both heart wrenching and critically important to discuss. Attendees and those tuning in heard stories of elder abuse by family members and supposed caregivers. Panelists, who included Benjamin Jenkins (litigation director, Legal Services for Maine Elders), Phillip Marshall (elder justice advocate), and Kathy Stokes (director, AARP Fraud Prevention Programs), discussed the importance of getting one’s financial house in order before it is too late. For example - one panelist suggested that people begin their ‘bucket list’ with 1) a health directive, 2) a will & estate plans, and 3) building savings. Then after that, think about the trip you’ve always wanted to take to Machu Pichu or the sail boat you planned on buying.
