We’re excited to announce that we have been selected by the Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG) to assess climate change vulnerabilities of the Twin Pass corridors and their resiliency connectors and to leverage and advance critical projects that implement adaptive climate mitigation measures across Kern County. Several roadway and rail corridors supporting transnational goods movements connect the Central Valley with southern California and the rest of the country. The Tejon and Tehachapi Passes, also known as the Twin Passes, are geographic barriers that make east-west and southern goods movement connections to the Central Valley vulnerable to extreme climate events, including high temperatures, wildfires, flooding, and landslides. Our team worked with Fehr & Peers and Kern COG in developing the Kern Area Regional Goods Movement Operations (KARGO) 1 and KARGO 2 studies, which identified numerous critical roadway and railway projects around the Twin Passes. Improvements will address climate-change-related concerns and priorities impacting transportation users in the region. #GoodsMovement #WeAreMarkThomas

The celebration continues! The San Joaquin Council of Governments broke ground this week on the State Route 99/120 Connector project to help move people and goods throughout the region. The improvements over the next two years or so will also improve traffic safety, reduce traffic congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality. For the first time in its history, SJCOG is leading the construction project and coordinating with Caltrans, City of Manteca, and Union Pacific Railroad. Mark Thomas designed the improvements, WSP will manage the project, and Teichert Construction will build the improvements. #SR99120 #SR99120Connector #MeasureK #transportation #highways #groundbreaking #CityofManteca #CityofRipon #CaltransDistrict10

Our team is proud to continue supporting the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) for the preparation of final PS&E for the I-80/I-680/SR 12 – SR 12 (West)/Red Top Road/Business Center Drive (Package 5), a part of the ongoing efforts for the I-80/I-680/SR 12 Interchange Complex. I-80 is a major transcontinental corridor and functions as a primary commuter route within Solano County and nearby Bay Area counties. The route also provides an important connection between the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Sierra Nevada, and Lake Tahoe regions, and connects truck routes to the Port of Oakland, contributing to the economic health of the State through goods distribution in the western U.S. The Project involves extending Business Center Drive from its current terminus to a realigned Red Top Road. This extension includes construction of a new partial interchange on SR 12 (West) at Red Top/Business Center, as well as a reconstruction of the I-80/Red Top Road interchange. Improvements are designed to reduce congestion, accommodate anticipated increases in traffic, and address safety concerns along the existing interchange. #Interchange #WeAreMarkThomas

On Friday, July 26th, ASCE OC Construction Institute (CI) had the wonderful opportunity to tour the I-5 South County Improvements Project between SR-73 and El Toro Road. This project will improve 6.5 miles of I-5 through Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, and Lake Forest, and is targeted to be fully complete by early 2025. ASCE OC would like to thank the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) for hosting and leading such an informative tour. Our students and professionals left the tour feeling inspired and excited about the infrastructure improvements happening right in their hometowns! A special thank you to Logan Selleck and Niall A. Barrett, P.E. with OCTA for spending their Friday with us and for the wonderful learning experience! And last but not least, to Mark Thomas for sponsoring lunch! We appreciate everyone's support. #ASCEOCCI #ASCEOC #ConstructionInstitute #OCTA

We’re excited to announce that the Sports Park Pedestrian Overcrossing (POC) Project in the CITY OF WOODLAND, CALIFORNIA won the 2024 APWA Sacramento Chapter Project of the Year Award in the Parks & Trails category! The Chapter’s Awards Program recognizes public works projects that demonstrate excellent management, administration, design, sustainability, construction, and community relations, as well as the strong alliance among the managing agency, designer, contractor, and construction management teams who worked together to complete these projects. Our team worked with the City to develop the Structure Advance Planning Study (APS) and ATP application in 2015. We continued to assist in developing the environmental clearance and final design for the project, which was completed earlier this year. The POC provides a much-needed non-motorized and safe connection across SR 113 with continuous access between the Woodland Sports Park, community and transit centers, schools, and neighborhoods. #Bridges #WeAreMarkThomas #ActiveTransportation

The Roseville Parkway Extension Project, connecting Roseville Parkway between Washington Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard in the City of Roseville, recently achieved a major milestone in construction! Some of our team members were present to witness the precast girders being installed over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks and Industrial Avenue in early June. Our team completed PA&ED and final design of the project, adding a new four-lane, 300-foot-long bridge and a Class I path along the north side of the roadway, providing a high-quality active transportation facility for the region. #WeAreMarkThomas #Bridges #ActiveTransportation
