Since beginning his term as chairman of the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA), Martin Marietta Executive Vice President and CFO Jim Nickolas has enjoyed working with NSSGA’s talented staff to make a difference in communities across the country. “The past few months have been tremendous,” he said. “We successfully partnered with industry leaders and lawmakers to encourage passage of the bipartisan Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2024, which was signed into law in May. This act, in part, provides funding for the building and repair of our nation’s runways. In June, we met with more than 100 producers, Manufacturers & Services members and friends at NSSGA’s Leadership Summit in Florida. Next month, we’ll attend the Legislative & Policy Forum in Washington, D.C., where we look forward to educating lawmakers on the importance of aggregates and promoting policies important to the industry.”

Park Scholar studying Accounting at North Carolina State University

Last week marked the end of my 11-week corporate tax internship at Martin Marietta here in Raleigh, NC. To say that I learned a lot this summer hardly does this experience the justice it deserves. It would be more accurate to say that I have learned more about what I do (and don't) like about corporate tax, that I have built lasting relationships with knowledgeable tax professionals, and that I have gained a greater appreciation for the intricacies of our tax system. As my first internship, Martin Marietta was an incredible company to begin my career in the accounting industry with. Most accounting students begin their careers with public accounting firms, but I am grateful to have started on the industry side of the field. This experience will allow me to be a more patient and empathetic public accountant; after all, busy season is busy season, regardless of what side of the field you're on! "Culture" is one of the greatest buzzwords in the corporate and recruiting environment. It is easy to make promises of a great culture, but it is quite difficult to keep those promises. Martin Marietta truly is a world-class organization that renews and keeps that promise each day. That commitment begins with a focused executive team, shines in recruiters like Stanley Stiles, and is evident in every person I had the pleasure of meeting this summer. I am unbelievably grateful for the knowledge and advice of my team, our managers, and our directors. Between the alphabet soup of tax acronyms and the dreaded Excel workpapers, their guidance allowed me to absorb so much invaluable information. I would like to thank my direct managers Jenny Smith, Jeff Hendrickson, Brian Short, CPA, Nathan Rahmer, CPA, and Isaac Jordan for their dedication to my personal and professional development. To specifically thank everyone that deserves it would be to write a book, but I am eternally grateful to everyone at Martin Marietta for the piece they played in making this internship so valuable!
