This week, MEMA is highlighting All Hazards Planner Scott Langlands. As an All Hazards Planner, Scott works to update emergency management plans for the Commonwealth and collaborates with multiple stakeholders to disseminate situational awareness products during incidents. Scott is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Vermont Army National Guard. This month, Scott earned his Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College. As the final step in Scott’s degree program, he and MEMA Assistant Director for Planning and Preparedness David Bryant attended the college’s National Security Seminar for a four-day event during which civilian leaders like David had an opportunity to discuss current national security issues with future military leaders. Congratulations, Scott, and thank you for your service! #WeAreEM

Emergency Management Directors from across central and western Massachusetts attended MEMA West’s Quarterly EMD meeting in Agawam this week. These quarterly meetings provide a variety of educational resources to EMDs. The program included a special dedication of MEMA West’s Operations Room in honor of former Local Coordinator Bob Barry, who passed away in March. Bob served with MEMA for more than 17 years and was not only an integral part of the agency but also a trusted friend and a beloved colleague. Other Highlights from the meeting included: - A presentation from MEMA Public Information Officer Justin Shrair on preparedness and emergency messaging during the Atlantic Hurricane Season. - A ceremony to recognize 15 individuals who successfully completed MEMA's Massachusetts Professional Emergency Manager Program (MPEM). Some were celebrated for meeting Associate-Level MPEM qualifications while others received recognition at the Specialist level. MPEM is open to anyone employed or appointed in Massachusetts as an emergency manager or who holds a position with emergency management as a core responsibility. Congratulations to the City of Leominster, MA on completing the North Nashua Riverbank Stabilization Project to mitigate the impacts of erosion. MEMA staff met with local officials, FEMA officials, and others who were all on hand during the final site visit for the project. The project addressed and stabilized a section of the existing southern bank of the North Nashua River to minimize future erosion. A portion of that riverbank was exposed and eroding toward a major sewer line. MEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Unit provided direct technical assistance with grant application development and assisted with project monitoring until its completion. #MitigationMonday
