#Spotlight Rinaldo Diaz, Advanced Technical Support Specialist II, MassDOT Planning and Enterprise Services, IT Department. “I began my MassDOT career back in 2014 at Quincy Headquarters (QHQ). My current role today is an Advanced Technical Support Specialist II, and I offer extensive technical support to numerous end users and to the MassDOT Service Department team. I provide technical recommendations, troubleshoot best practices, and answer questions about Legacy technologies. I also give advice on how to enhance your work experience using Windows OS, iPhone OS, and Android OS. Additionally, I handle technical escalations and fix failing technology and components, retire obsolete equipment, and set up new installations of hardware, audio/video, and lab equipment. I also handle record keeping and data entry for the tools the Service Department uses. The person who motivated me to pursue my current career was someone who used to be very important to me. They were the reason I transitioned from the food industry to the IT industry. During my childhood, I lacked positive role models, so I looked up to a few characters from my favorite world - Batman, Lex Luthor, Yami Marik, and Sephiroth, just like many kids from the 90s. They may be fictional, but they taught me important lessons as I was growing up. It was a great moment for me when Massachusetts stood out as the only state effectively responding to the pandemic, keeping operations running smoothly while the world was in crisis. Coordinating the distribution of over 1000 laptops and other devices across the state to maintain records and assets during the 21st Century crisis was a significant achievement. Despite working in a limited space with the virus all around us in winter, our tech team managed to make things work on the fly for all our users and VIPs. I believe we handled the challenge magnificently and gave it our all. Secret talent no one knows about… I can whistle 3 different ways, and burp on command. I was one of the TOP 10 ranked Yu-Gi-Oh! worldwide for a little while. My advice: Have confidence in yourself and take control of your future, don't be afraid of making mistakes. And remember to always be curious, keep an open mind and never stop learning. Now, I can pass on the knowledge and skills I've gained to the new technicians joining our Service Department team. #IT #Support #MassDOT #Technician #Employeespotlight

#Employee #Spotlight on Kevin Thompson, Environmental Analyst I, MassDOT Environmental Services - Wetlands. “My top advice is to never hesitate to ask if you're interested in something. Whether it's getting involved in a project or learning more about a specific field, people are always willing to help. I started as an intern in a different unit but expressed my interest in wetlands work to my supervisor, who immediately helped me join the Wetlands Unit meetings. Now, a year later, I'm a full-time employee with the Wetlands Unit, all because I asked. One of the projects I've enjoyed the most is a stormwater improvement project along the Wachusett Reservoir in Sterling. It's a complex project that involves collaboration with MassDEP and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation , and the experience of coordinating with other agencies for the benefit of a drinking water supply has been truly rewarding. The challenges of the project have also helped me learn a lot. Our team deals with numerous projects with complex issues, across the commonwealth and each site visit or town meeting is significant, ensuring that our wetland resources are protected, and the projects can continue to move forward. One of the perks of working in the environmental field is that we get to experience various aspects of the process. We work with designers, engineers, landscape architects, and project managers, but we also have the opportunity to go into the field and witness how those designs are implemented. When I started my internship at MassDOT, I was in my final semester at Northeastern University, exploring various job opportunities. The Environmental Unit provided me with numerous chances to work on different projects, conduct fieldwork, and learn about new subjects. Attending meetings with the Wetlands Unit made me realize that this could be the right place for me. I contacted a professor at Northeastern to switch into a Wetlands science course, and MassDOT allowed me to continue part-time as a co-op during my last semester. Applying my classroom knowledge to my work and fully immersing myself was an amazing experience. When MassDOT offered me a job after graduation, I knew it was the perfect fit and having that job security was fantastic.” #Environmental #MassDOT #Wetlands #Montague #InterntoHire #EmployeeSpotlight #Journey
