Making reforestation scalable.

About us

Mast Reforestation is a climate tech company with a mission to make reforestation scalable. As bigger, hotter, and more frequent fires increasingly destroy forested land each year, Mast facilitates faster, more resilient forest regeneration. Mast provides vertically integrated reforestation services to get forest restoration projects up and running in weeks, not years. Services include seed collection, seedling cultivation, site preparation, seedling hand planting, aerial drone-based seeding, and ongoing site monitoring. To fund its projects and open new revenue streams for landowners, Mast sells carbon removal credits that allow companies seeking positive climate action to invest in reforestation projects for 200 years or more. Mast’s investors include Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six, Social Capital, DBL Partners, Marc Benioff’s TIME Ventures, Elemental Excelerator, and more. To learn more, visit MastReforest.com.

This summer, we’ve been asking volunteers to visit national forests and scout for closed female cones as part of our Reforestation project. Curious to know what happens once we get your surveys of closed female cones? 🧐 Swipe to see! 🧗♀️Our partners at Mast Reforestation climb those trees and collect the cones - sometimes to astounding heights! The cones are then processed to collect the seeds inside them and used to grow new seedlings at a nursery. Once the seedlings reach maturity, they’re planted in forests that need more trees. Want to help reforestation experts know which trees to climb? There’s still time to get involved! We have about a week left of the project and some great prizes in store. Everyone who submits 20 surveys will receive a $100 REI gift card, and the volunteers from California and Montana who collect the most surveys (50 minimum) will win a pair of custom Adventure Scientists Peak Skis! 🔗 Check the link to learn more and sign up. https://lnkd.in/gJi9H8xS 📸 Mast Reforestation

The Plumas National Forest in northern CA was historically managed for timber, leading to forest structures and densities that were not optimized for ecosystem health. This left the region primed to burn when the North Complex Fire—one of the largest in California history—blazed through. That’s why our work at Feather River Dome is so important. By restoring a forest that is better adapted to future fire and climate impacts, we’re protecting habitat for native species and sequestering carbon for an estimated 200+ years. Learn about our project and how you can support our efforts to restore resilient forests. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dWFiRa43 #mastreforestation #forestrestoration #forestresilience

Mast Reforestation is focused on replanting wildfire burned lands. 🔥 🌲 🤔 Why? From Lydia DePillis at The New York Times earlier this year: "Overcrowded by decades of fire suppression, dried out by drought and weakened by beetle infestations, forests now burn rapidly and so intensely that their natural ability to regenerate is vastly diminished." 📰 For those of you curious to read more, the article gives an overview of Mast Reforestation's work, including work to address supply chain issues through vertical integration. 🌱 🌲 Take a read. 👀 Or listen (less than 20 minutes). 🎧 -- #MastReforestation #ClimateTech #Wildfires #CarbonRemoval https://lnkd.in/giSMZtbB

A recent study published in Nature Portfolio found that global wildfire severity and frequency has more than doubled in the past 20 years. Six of the worst fire seasons have occurred in the past seven years. These findings make resilient reforestation that much more important. At Mast, we are focused on bringing back forests to be more resilient in the face of future fires, droughts, and other climate disturbances. Dive deeper into the study at the link in our comments 🔗 Learn more about our reforestation efforts (and how you can get involved): https://lnkd.in/gBVqUCJj

🌍 You can’t solve climate change without nature. 🌲 According to the IPCC, nature needs to deliver up to 1/3 of emissions reductions by 2030 to keep global warming below 1.5°C. Reforestation is one of the most powerful tools we have. That’s why I’m excited to start a new role focused on Carbon Market Partnerships at Mast Reforestation, alongside Paul Davis, Grant Canary, and the incredible team committed to restoring forests devastated by wildfires. 🚀 Through strategic acquisitions, Mast is building an integrated reforestation supply chain: 📦 Silvaseed Company manages the majority of the US Northwest’s forest seed inventory. 🌱 Cal Forest Nurseries grows the majority of California’s seedlings. 🌲 Mast Reforestation restores wildfire-burned lands. I’m particularly drawn to Mast’s bold vision, commitment to sound science, and the chance to help shape and scale this critical work. Let's goooooooo! 🌱 Curious to learn more or just catch up? Feel free to DM me—let’s connect! – PS. If you know me, this should come as no surprise because I’m particularly interested in scaling global climate solutions and shaping markets and ecosystems to remove barriers to commercial scale. This drive grew during my time at Shopify, working with ~30 carbon removal suppliers through the Sustainability Fund.

“As our forester, he (Zachary Bashoor) brought us into that fold and got everything kind of going for us,” said Harland. “He's been an integral part in this whole project. His company and his people following the planters and making sure our trees are planted, you know, the right way.” Reforestation is often necessary after a wildfire to establish desired species and ensure a landscape is on the right track. Often, the best approach is collaboration by a team that understands a client's property needs and creates a plan to meet their goals. We're honored to partner with Don and Sheep Creek Ranch, alongside Mast Reforestation, to continue restoration efforts. https://lnkd.in/djcTnHgj

As our General Manager, Nik Larum, explains, catastrophic wildfires are “burning with such intensity that they’re burning the ground and that's killing the seed that would naturally regenerate.” That’s why we’ve stepped in, planting over 400M seedlings in the past 25 years to give forests a leg up. NBC Bay Area recently featured our work helping both private and public landowners restore their land: https://lnkd.in/dgbTt5RA

🌲And we are live with 2024 cone collections across the west! Our on-site operators, with special guest Matthew Aghai, are all smiles at the end of the day dropping off bushels of cones at temporary storage before shipment to our processing facility in Northern California. Ponderosa pine seed collected in Southern Oregon is critical for post fire reforestation and secure seed banking by the land managers in the region. Over the years Mast's seed program has collected a variety of conifer species with potential to grow hundreds of millions of seedlings for many forest types across the Western US. We invite you to connect with Silvaseed Company and Cal Forest Nurseries for all of your seed needs now and for future collection. Happy cone season! Seed Program Manager- Mast Reforestation

Four years ago, my colleague Matthew Aghai encouraged me to take a harder look at the seed supply chain and greatly emphasized its importance and need for investment and action. It's been a humbling challenge and I am encouraged to see momentum across the sector. Once again, it’s that special time of year and I am now in my fourth season of organizing cone collections across the western US! Cone collections are kicking off this week in multiple zones across California, southern Oregon, and northeastern Washington, where we have found trees producing healthy, viable and ripening cones filled with seed! To get to this point is a large collaboration requiring many conversations, site visits, coordination of contracts, etc. etc… As always, I am filled with awe and gratitude for the partners, collectors, and operators who make increasing seed supply through these collaborative activities possible. HEADS UP! There's more seed to collect than any one group can coordinate, and the future of seed supply is truly a team effort. For the land managers and foresters across the west who may have questions about collections they are managing please do not hesitate to message me directly here on LinkedIn and I will forward my direct contact info. Or those of you working with them, send folks my way! I am more than happy to provide a second opinion on cone cuts, recommendations for contractors and materials, as well as share lessons learned to hopefully contribute to your successful collection. For those impacted by wildfire ➡ Scheduled collections I am organizing are expected to provide seed sources relevant to the actively burning Park Fire (CA) and Shelley Fire (CA) as well as burned areas from years past including the Bootleg Fire (OR, ‘21), Ford Corkscrew Fire (WA, ‘21), and the August Complex Fire (CA, ‘20) to name a few. If you or your network have seed or sow order needs I invite you to connect with one of our nurseries, Cal Forest Nurseries or Silvaseed Company, to place an order and inquire on inbound seed from the 2024 collection season. As someone who is hell bent on solutions for both people and planet in the reforestation supply chain I look forward to continuing to collaborate in the world of seed. Cheers to a successful collection season! #reforestation #treeseed #nativeseed #wildfire #restoration 📸 credit Julian Yuh Coleman
