An analyst’s job is to transform information into insight. But there’s a catch that needs to be addressed, and that even the most gifted analysts need to be reminded of: skills on their own don’t guarantee impact. That’s ultimately up to the data. And the thing is? Not all data has meaning. ... and that’s OK. Part of being a good analyst is knowing when to take a deep breath, acknowledge the fact that there is nothing of value in the dataset, and move on. It's better than finding false meaning in the data and inspiring bad decision-making! Want to read more on the subject? Enrique sometimes talks about using Scenario Manager to evaluate how a different set of inputs would impact a calculated output. But what if you know the output you want and need to find the input? Enter: Goal Seek. Goal Seek allows you to find a result you want in a formula by changing the value of a given input cell. This requires a single, hard-coded input cell and a single, formula-based output cell. As an example, you could use Goal Seek to calculate the sales (input) required to hit a specific profit target (output). Here’s how to do it: 1. Make sure that your output cell is evaluated with a formula that depends on the input cell 2. Go to Data > What-If Analysis > Goal Seek 3. In the “Set cell:” bar, select the formula-based output cell 4. In the “To value:” bar, enter the desired result for the output cell 5. In the “By changing cell:” bar, select the hard-coded input cell 6. Press OK Excel will then automatically adjust the value of the input cell so that the output cell evaluates to your desired value! PRO TIP: If you want to test multiple inputs, use Excel’s Solver tool instead! #mavenquicktips #excel #data #analytics #businessintelligence #careers

Do you create reports for your organization that seem to go nowhere? Maybe you're focusing on the wrong things. DON'T sell your repots like this... 1. I can create charts, graphs, and interactive maps 2. I can make a report available on any device 3. I can make the data up-to-date 4. You can access the report anytime If so, you likely won't be building this report for long... These types of selling points are all about the "what", and don't talk about the actual value of BI reports. Instead, try something like the following: 1. I can create charts, graphs, and interactive maps to help tell a story with our data and create a clear narrative 2. I can make a report available on any device, so that it can be accessible at anytime 3. The report data will always be up-to-date so key stakeholders can monitor our KPI's in near-real time 4. All reports will include clear and actionable insights that will talk about what were seeing in the data, why we're seeing it, and how we can take advantage of the what/why to optimize our business These points get at the real value of any BI reporting solution. What do you think? Let us know below 👇 #data #analytics #businessintelligence #datavisualization
