There are many misconceptions about how IVF actually works—but those who have experienced it know that the realities of the process are more complicated than they might appear. Last month, 30 current and former fertility patients opened up about their unexpectedly long and challenging IVF journeys in a powerful piece by Annie Daly for Allure Magazine. This collection of unfiltered stories includes one from Maven’s Senior Medical Director, Danielle Dang. As a family medicine resident, Danielle underwent five back-to-back egg retrievals that ultimately resulted in five frozen embryos. But a few years later, when she and her husband went to test and implant the embryos, none worked. After 7.5 years of infertility, they ultimately had a son using a donor egg. Danielle views this experience—and her disenchantment with the fertility system—as one of the biggest reasons that she joined Maven, where every day she works to reimagine fertility as something affordable, accessible, and transparent—something that eases the patient burden rather than adding to it. Read more about Danielle’s experience, in her own words, and the 29 other stories of past and present fertility journeys: https://lnkd.in/euaqpRgZ

“Is there enough flexibility in my role to work from home more often?” “What should I do if I unexpectedly need to take time off to take care of my baby?” “How do I ask for more support without feeling like I’m burdening the team?” With the lines between work and life more blurred than ever, working parents are bringing challenging questions to HR and their managers. So how do the best leaders approach these conversations? The main rule: If you’re hearing the word “sorry,” question what you could do differently to level-set on your team. Swipe for the dos and don’ts of talking to working parents, and find the full guide (and tons of other resources) over on Maven’s family benefits resource hub: https://bit.ly/4cto4DE

In this week’s issue of The Preprint, our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Neel Shah spoke with esteemed reproductive health equity researcher and Maven’s third annual Visiting Scientist, Dr. Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH. She sat down with Neel to explain what drives her to solve big problems, how university centers aren’t so different from startups, and why her research questions always begin, as she earnestly tells everyone, with love. Infertility is isolating. But it's a challenge shared by many—and it may be relevant to your own employees. In a recent webinar with Ellevest, our VP of Growth, Isha Vij, highlighted the importance being vocal in the workplace about the importance of offering fertility and family-building support to employees. Providing these resources not only shows empathy, but makes business sense. Studies show that 97% of women feel more loyal to their company when fertility benefits are offered. An investment in fertility benefits is an investment in top talent. Learn more about how fertility benefits can transform your workplace: https://bit.ly/3ye6Fkt

Something I didn’t have on my maternity leave bingo card: becoming a superuser for my company’s product. I joined Maven Clinic because I knew how impactful the product was for helping families become pregnant or pursue other paths to parenthood. Amid our current fertility crisis, helping families access the shortest path to a healthy baby feels like some of the most meaningful work we could do. But you know what I entirely underestimated? How important access to support would be during the craziest period of my life so far: postpartum. And the current standard - one visit with an OBGYN at 6 weeks pp - is, frankly, a joke. In the last few months since delivering my little girl I’ve: ✅ Met with lactation consultants several times (and learned what a nursing strike was when my baby suddenly wouldn’t latch.) ✅ Talked through my physical symptoms with a pelvic floor therapist after a wild delivery (it’s not just about the kegals, y’all!) ✅ Spoke with a nutrition coach to brainstorm ways to increase my iron intake (the iron in my prenatal vitamin just wasn’t cutting it.) ✅ Met with a mental health specialist to help me answer the question: is it PPD or am I just really tired? (so far, I’m just tired.) ✅ More times than I can count I connected with and received support from sleep coaches (see above, I’m tired.) ✅ Consulted a career coach as I prepared to return to work (and I thank her for the suggestion to not return to work on a Monday!) All virtual (cause leaving the house was just not happening). All free to me. All on the Maven app.  Forever grateful to Maven Clinic for the last 16 weeks with my daughter and for so much support during the most challenging and beautiful time of my life so far.  I'm lucky I had access to this support - not everyone does. Excited to be back and feeling all the more motivated to ensure women and families have access this level of preconception, pregnancy AND postpartum care. We must do better!
