Today we observe #Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day became known as Juneteenth - a time to celebrate, gather as a family, reflect on the past and look to the future. Last night, we had a great time supporting Lyla Walsh's "A Girl's Guide to Engineering" camp in Pittsburgh's South Hills area! The camp is for 6th - 9th grade girls and is part of Lyla's Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award project. Miranda Slomkowski, Nina Carney, P.E., and Sarah Ramp, P.E., did a lively presentation on Civil Engineering and what they each do at Menard. Then, they led a popsicle stick bridge-building activity. Two teams were able to balance 3 books on the bridge they built! There are some budding civil engineers in this group! The camp will run through Thursday and have presentations and activities with mechanical, chemical, nuclear, and environmental engineers. Nathan McLean, MCE, P.E., M.ASCE is now the President-Elect for the 2024-2025 ASCE Syracuse Section! Nathan opened Menard’s first office in Upstate New York in 2020.  As a Regional Sales Engineer, Nathan is responsible for business development, estimating and sales in public and private projects. Prior to Menard, Nathan spent 15 years as a geotechnical consultant on various transportation and building projects throughout the eastern United States. A native of Syracuse, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarkson University and a Master of Civil Engineering focusing on Geotechnical Engineering from Norwich University.
